Paper cannot be Progress Made In School System Reform. ‘The school board had a harmontous meeting Yast night and made some progress with the report of the committee on course of study and books. The principle “no new text books” endorsed; also, by striking out certain ‘books from the list and making them works of reference and by dropping others altogether, “fewer studies’ are provided. The ghost of the old board seems happily to have lost its terrors for the trustees. If ali the proposed ehanges are discussed in the same spirit the Public can have no complaints to mike im respect to the fairness of the board. ‘There is, however, one matter growing out of the past action of the trustees respecting the committee's report, which demands a loud pro- ‘test, though the board itself need not shoulder the bleme. According to the minutes of the meeting of the trustees on June 24th, the follow- ing resolution was adopted by a vote of 9 to7, im reference to the report of the committee on course of study: “That the recommendations of the committee m4 i considered, but that all preceding there- Gartarfercuse as not before the Board, or any 2 seems that the mover of this resolution ‘was tired of the profitiess discussion that had sprung up concerning the preamble, and desired to end it in order that the and then demarded of the mover what he Meant by it. Its effect he thought was to strike out all of the report, preceding the recommen- ations. As the latter motion would be parlia- mentary,-no especial exception was taken by any one to the roundabout method of present- ing 1". ‘The board's method of striking out part of a report by resolving to shut its eyes to the fact that this part existed, reminded one of Mr. Podsnap’s habit of loftily waving aside by a motion of his hand all unanswerabie arguments, and was rather amusing. It appeared to be Father a good joke. But it turns out to be more serious. The secretary of the board construes ‘the resolution to mean not only that the board in adopting the report struck out the preamble, ‘Dut that it instructed him to expunge from the ‘Minutes of a preceding meeting, already ap- Proved, the record of the fact that the commtt- tee had presented a report containing such a Preambie. In other words, the record is to be falsified so as to make it appear that at a re- ent meeting the committee on the course of ordered to be printed, when they really report- dsomething else. Nothing less than an un- mistakeable motion to expunge from the it. We venture toto assert that its will not assume the responsibility for intention, as that with which he 1s Since question has arisen as to the Proper construction of the resolution, it will be ‘Wise in the secretary (Mr. Brooks) to ask the ‘board for directions in the matter before taking ‘@py steps upon his own responsibility. It {3 Femembered that the fallure to obey the @irection of the board, that 250 copies of the original report be printed, is properly credited to him, and people may begin to talk if he makes himseif further conspicuous in the same @irection by attempting, on his own authority, _ to suppress the opinions of the committee alto- gether. This is carrying his hostility to a reform the school rules quite too far. ——<—_--_____ Dr. Alonzo Garceion, the democratic gover- ‘Ror of Maize, who has filled the position so creditably, was unanimously re-nominated yes- -terday by his party. Senator McDonald ‘supplies to the Indianapolis Journa! the figures t establish the nomination and election of Mr. Hendricks. He maintains that Hendricks will get the votes of Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, ‘Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Virginia, -Florida, and very likely Vermont and Rhode Island; and that while Tilden ts making great efforts to secure the nomination, he won't be able to get the requisite number of votes from the south. —_—_—_—_~--___ Come home, you suckers.
