Stafford, A the well-known contractor, was badly bruised by being thrown out of his buggy on Penn- sylvania avenue, between 17th and isth streets, yesterday afternoon, in cot juence of being caught between a street car and a brick wagon. He was dragged for some distance emis | bis life. Yesterday afternoon, Messrs. J. ‘Saville and R. H. Downman tn driving past the P-street circle were capsized by a hee | riage, their top broken off an were thrown violently tothe ground. Mr. Sa- Ville received serious injury in the chest, and was taken to his home by a friend who was driving near by at the time. Mr. Downman was not much injured. ....While engine No. 4 was going to the fire on North Capitol street yester- ¥ afternoon, one of the horses was overcone by the heat and had to be left on the ground. It ts feared that he will be unfit for the tire ser- vice again. Mus. RAPER SENTENCED FOR SHOOTING BUcK- LEY.—Yesterday, in the Criminal Court, Judge Hagner, Mrs. Martha A. Raper, convicted of assaulting with intent to kill Thos. M. Buckley, ‘was placed at the bar for sentence. She attract- ed much attention, and the sympathies of the crowd attending court were With her. Judge —— Said that he felt disposed to take as lenient a view of her case as the law would allow bit todo. He would consider that the shooting must have been caused by a sudden impulse, which would take away much of its apparent malice, and the sentence should be the least allowed by law for the offense, viz two years in the penitentiary. If 1s understood that an appli m for pardon will be made. A stay of sentence was granted. PERIURERS TO BE LOOKED AFTER.—Ye3ter- day, fn the Criminal Court (Judge Hagner), Wm. Parker, convicted of burglary and larceny, was ‘up for sentence. The court called attention to the affidavits to obtain a new trial submitved in the cases of Heideman and Harris, who were connected with this same transaction, co avict- €d, and sent to the penitentiary, and remarked en the deliberate perjury committed ta swear- ing to false statements in these affidavits to establish an alibi, and called the attention of the District Attorney to the fact, hoping tha these parties would be apprehended and pin ished for their crime. He imposed a sentence of ‘six years, but on ‘fon of the criminal for mercy, reduced it six months. RUN OVER.—This morning David Snyder, a boy 11 years old, while running to the fire, on Massachusetts avenue, was run over by a wagon driven by Georgé E. Thomas, and badly injured. Editor Star:—1 noticed in your paper of the 25th instant my name appears as being preseat at a meeting of the boss bakers, and that I was elected treasurer of an association formed un- der the name of “Bakers’ Protective Associa- tion.” I would like for you to contradict it. Neither myself nor any one else of our firm ‘was present at the above meeting, as we have not raised nor do we intend raising the price of bread, as we do not see any necessity for it. JNO. F. Scitz & Son, Washington, June SWEDISH AMERICAN ASSOCIATION.—A call hav- ing been made in the columns of Tug Star fora meeting of the Swedes resident in Washington, for the purpose of organizing a Swedish Amer- ican association, the meeting took place yester- day evening at the Corcoran bullding. The call, which was signed by Prof. Oscar Oldberg, chief clerk of the marine hospital service. add Mr. Fred Palime, of the warrant division, ‘Treasury department, brought together quite & number of Swedes. Mr. J.T. Appleberg was called to the chair, and Prof. Oldberg was re- quested to state the objects of the proposed or- ganization, which he sald he thought should be to further the interests of American citizens of Swedish birth, to assist deserving countrymen, and to initiate a closer unton of friendship and purpose ‘among the Swedish soctettes in this country. Mr. Palime followed with similar views, and the meeting concurring therein, pro- ceeded to organize the new association by elect- ing a president and a secretary, There were present a majority of the Swedes in this city. Among them was Gen. Stohlbrand, whose ser- vices in the late war made him distinguished. An adjourned meeting will be held, when a constitution and by-laws willbe adopted, and the remaining oflicers elected. Prof. O3car Oldberg was elected president, and Mr. Fred- erick Palime secretary. A WoMAN RUN OVER BY A TRAIN OF CaRs.—A Hoge to the Baltimore Sun, from Cumberland, Ma., states that yesterday the mutilated body of & woman about 60 years of age was found on the track of the Baltimore and Onfo Ratlroad, near Rawlings’ station, 13 miles west of that city. On her person a purse was found with the name of J. ‘T. Kelly on it, and an envelope addressed to Bridget Kelly, care of Ellen Kelly, 243 New Jersey avenue, Washington, D.C. The envelope contained a railroad ticket from Wheeling to Washington. It {s supposed she fell from the express train Monday night while passing from one car to another.
