TESTIMONY “‘OF THE WOMAN IN THE CASE.” Yesterday the trial of James Stokes and Mary Kane aljas Campbell, colored, in the Criminal Court, Judge Hagner, on an indictment for manslaughter in having on the 16th of March last caused the death of Charles Kane by strik- ing, kicking and bruising him on the head, frac- turing his siull, was concluded. Kanesaid twice he would shoot Stokes. Witness then ran off about a hundred ‘ards. Turned and saw they were still fight- tog. Several others—Carter, MeKenny and Prince—came along and asked her what she was crying for; but she was excited and could not speak. Witness was not married to Kane, but had been living with him up to four weeks he occurrence. vein cross-examination witness testiiled that she slept.at Kane’s house on the ratlroad several Sunday nights before the occurrence. Witness has two children, Kane being the father of one and the father of the other lives in the city. Witness went to church alone that Sunday night; was about 200 yards from the hen’ Kane came up; saw him strike Stakes the first blow; did not hear Kane ask Stokes what he was doing with his wife; heard hfm cal! She denied much of the testimony of Officer White as to what he said she had told him. by the court:— When she left they were knock- ing their heads together. The defendant, James Stokes. testitied that he met Mary Campbell that night. Witness had been to church at Mr. Foster's, in the neighbor- hood of the church where she had been. she said “ d evening,” and some words passed about the weather, during which she remarked she did not like to walk alone, and he walked with her. She then looked behind and sald some one was coming, and in a short time the man came up and struck witness, mying him two licks. She broke away, and Kane sald: “Come here, madam, I heard that you had come up to ‘gallant around.” Kane then told witness he would shoot him, and not knowing but he had something in his hand he seized him, and K. kicked him and made at him with his head, as he could not use his hands, witness holding them. Kane gave witness one rap with his bead, and witness gave him four or five raps in return, and when he let him go he fell; he then kicked him, and afterwards he found a razor in the road which he thought Kane had dropped. The exercises consisted of voca! ard instrumental music, recitations, &c., and Tetlected credit alike on teacher and pupils, eliciting the plaudits of the audience. A VERDICT OF GUILTY AS TO STOKES. Several witnesses were calied as to character, but could not testify to the “general reputa- tion.” Afterarguments by counsel and a charge by the court, the- jury returned a verdict of guilty against Stokes and acquitted Mary Kane, A second indictment against her for being an accessory was then nolle prosequied and she was discharged. A small purse was made up for her by the jury. The Horticultural Society. MEETING LAST NIGHT, The Horticultural Society met last evening at German Hall—Mr. Jobn Saul presiding and Mr. G. T. Chase secretary. Messrs. M. C. Barnard, R. J. Meigs, jr., and Peter Guigon was nom!- nated and elected members. A PROFITABLE MUSHROOM CROP. Mr. J. T. C. Clark called attention to some fine Mushrooms Lee by Mr. Peter Guigon in Uniontown. He explained that these was from 30 feet and 4 feet deep, and the air appears to be admftted at the end. The spawn is coming up thickly, and making an estimate from present indications he will take from this pit heigl saya of m ms, and he is now selling at 40 cents per pound. Miss Ida Geler received the class honor gold medal; Miss Minnie Hell- muth the sliver medal. Silver medals for con- duct were awarded to the Misses E. Lancer, 8. ddes, M. Collins, B. Geddes, H.
