THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY........... -April 15, L879 CROSBY % NOVES....Editor. a 500—beine @ much larger factae and germmnaet claculotion than (at of ali the other 4atlg vapors im the ety acid ‘The Russian secret <octeties which announced their determination to assassinate the subordl- nate officers of the.Czar seem to have forgotten the assurance which they gave In the same con- nection tha: the Czar himself should be spared. ‘The Czar has now escaped safely from the third attempt upon his life, but the fact that he has passed the number popularly coasidered fatal, will hardly reassure him in respect to the fu- ture. The social condition of Russia may rea- sonably give uneasiness to its rulers, The re- Volt against despotism 1s net confined to the lower classes, a3 has {6ijuently been the case in other domestic risings. Indeed, the revo- lutionare <pirit 1s strongest and flads those ‘willing to die in its behalf among the more cultured classes. These feel their subservience more keenly than the peasantry who, compara- tively speaking, bear oppression with indiffer- ence. As long as hate of the present cruel despotism 13 mainly confined to the fragments of the middie class, no other opposition to the government than is. indicated by frequent at- tempts to assassinate those in power can be ex- pected. 1 will not be until the flame spreads mong the lower classes that there willbe a Russian revolution on as vast a scale and with the same characteristics as the French revolu- | ‘westion of Mr. Stephens, of Georgia, that bills could be introduced in the House through the petition box has been acted upon With such rushing promptitude by members with all sorts of measures, that that receptacle is likely to prove a regular Pandora’s box of tmischief. ——_—__-+e--_____ The “eminent citizen just returned from Europe, who has seen Grant and has been made the sole repository of the secret that he will not be a candidate for the presidency,” is catching it all along the line from the stalwart papers of the Grant persuasion. The St. Louis Globe- Democrat, for instance, is moved to admonish *the kindly idiots” who protest against drag- ging Grant into politics once more that “it ‘Won't be much of a drag.” ——__~.—____ The signs of rebellion against the nomination of Grant manifested by such papers as the New York Post and Harper's Weekly (editorially not Pictorially) have their counterpart in the hostill- ty to the candidacy of Tilden displayed by lead- ing democratic papers like the New York World. ‘That paper commences !ts leading editorial to- day by saying:—“Perhaps the most sinister of many sinister political phenomena of the day 13 the open activity with which the candidacy of Mr. Tilden on one side and the candidacy of Gen. Grant on the other side for the office of President of the United States are pushed for- ward at least a year and a half before the electors will be called upon to cast their bal- lots.” ————~-______ From a comparative statement showing the number of failures In the United States and Canada for the first three months of 1379, com- pared with those last year, it appears that there sa decrease in the quarter this year of $31 in the number of failures, or a falling off of 25 per cent. In the amount of labilittes the reduc- tion is much greater; the faflures in the last three months being only slightly in excess of n€-half those in the same period in 1873. It is hinted that there may be “a woman in the case” of the attempted assassination of the Czar. According to Kuropean gossip there has been some unpleasantness lately at the Russian court in consequence of the infatuation of the Czar for a charming lady (not his wife) of high birth, higher accomplishments, and the highest attractions. —_—____~--_______ John Kelly has scored a point against Tilden by getting a reversal by the court, of the deci- Sion continding the injunction issued by Judge Barrett to restrain the Tammany Society from initiating 143 new members elected last New Year’seve. The injunction had been granted on the prayer of the anti-Tammany leaders, ‘Who hoped to defeat the present sachems at the election which takes place this month. The newly-elected members were adherents of John Kelly, and the object of the injunctionists was to prevent them from being initiated in season to vote this year. ———.-__ UIA recent report of the New York board of health shows a great variety of deaths by accl- dents: A boy died of a fracture recetved while Playing foot-ball. This circumstance suggests a timely warning for impetuous and incautious Dall-players, wno.will soon be tempted to their favorite sport. A man was killed by an iron ball thrown from asling. Ifthe army of boys who unt the birds of the city with builets and stones which they hurl with great force from slingsand rubber shooters, wish to become acquainted ‘With prison they will disregard the fact noted above, and will continue in the evil of their ways. Hot tea fatally scalfied one person; hot soup another; hot coffee killed two; while as Many as ten persons lost their lives by getting, literally, “into hot water.” One person drank kerosene oll and died. Kerosene is no more to be recommennded as a beverage than as a fire- Kindler. Those who fasted faithfully during Lent will read with interest tha: at least one person who tried to eat meat during that period strangled In the attempt. + ___ Public men whose lives have been made mis- erable by the insatiate interviewer will perhaps take a hint from Wendell Phillips. The “stiver- tongued orator,” when approached the other day for his views on the negro exodus from tne south, Dlandly responded, “I have no views,” ——__—_~--_____ Edison has been interviewed some more, and he still insists that his electric light is a success, and that the light will be furnished at a cost one-third less than ts now paid for gas. This seems to be a concession that his invention will not accomplish what was first claimed, that it would reduce the cost of light to less than half the price of gas. It 1s noted, too, that the time for exhibiting the electric light at Menlo Park in a convincing way has been yet further postponed. On the whole, the price of gas stocks will not be apt to fall materially on the strength of the latest bulletin from Mento Park. —_—_———________ Young and f-cbie mothe » #ith fruil children will Doth become strong by the u-eof Hop Bitter (PHE CHALLENGE TO WALK OR RUN for 26 houce in yesterviay's Star was inserted without ‘Woz guthority, as I Lave nothing todo with it i J.
