wi | THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY............ March 29, 1879. ———_—_—_—_—_——_—_—_— CROSBY 8. NOYES.... Editor. Average oworn Daily Circulation over 27,800—being @ much larger bona fds, Peeular and permanent circulation than eat of all the other daily papers im the Gite added togsther. 0 SS SSSts i Se Washi m Heal Estate. ‘The renewed activity in the transfer of real estate, the large increase of building permits, and the growing demand for investment in real property in Washington is evidence that the large expenditure of $7,000,000 this season by the United States and District authorities for Substantial improvements at the nation’s seat of government, is stimulating private enter- prise to an extent decidedly encouraging to @ prosperous future for our city. Building ma- terials, skilledand common labor can now be procured at much lower rates than during the past four years, but already the demand indi- Cates that there will soon be an advance along the whole line. To those ene making improvements the present seems, to us, to S be the golden opportunity. Judicious investments in Washington realestate should be a safe and sure source of remunerative return for capital invested. The United States has taken entire charge and management of the affairs of the District of Columbia: pays one- half of the expenditures for improvements, re- pairs and municipal expenses, vesides appro- priating millions of dollars to ve expended in Washington for the general goverr.ment tm- provements and purposes. The progress and development of the whole country Is a guaran- tee of the continued prosperity of Washington as Its national capital, and as such ft must grow apace with the increase of population, wealth and resources of the republic. —_—___+-___. We give elsewhere a description in detail of the architectural devices by which the Patent OfMfice building is to be restored substantially to its condition before the fire, and of the im- | provements to be effected in the course of this restoration. Increased room and security against destruction by fire in the future are the important advantages to be gained. —_|_<--_____ ‘So General Sheridan and the Commissioner of Indian Affairs agree in the opinion that the Stories about Sitting Bull are the inventions of Wicked newspaper men. who go from place to Place seeking whom and in what manner they may deceive. The fact that a military officer should discredit rumors of a threatened war while the army bill is pending, is not more marvelous than the discovery of a subject of discussion respecting Indian affairs in regard to which Gen. Sheridan and Comnigsioner Hayt | Per month: Butcher ttalls, $11.90; bacon stands, are able to agree. —__--_____ “Mr. Lowe commenced to urge the recall of Sir Bartle Frere, but having lost his notes he | “leaning the aisles and policing the market. broke down and resumed his seat.” What a glorious opportunity to preach from this text a lay sermon on the decline and fall of oratory! A few considerations con: the beauty and strength of eloquence of Pericles, Demos- thenes, and Cicero, or, dismissing these for- eigners in the Podsnap manner as “un- English,” a brief review of the oratorical tri- Press upon England how low she has fallen when this distinguished statesman makes such an igmominious spectacle of himself. The fact that the English parilament of to-day shines only in managing the business of the world, and speaks tuous and indignant commander. Now we hear that peace and quiet reign in Venezuela under ‘the dictatorship of the patriot Guzman Blanco, the revolution against him being unsuccessful, and his traitorous opponents being effaced. ‘The peculiarity that the rebellious party in a revolution ts not decisively ascertained until after the fighting is over is not, perhaps, con- Mined to Venezuela; but itis nowhere else more Milustrated. ‘DR ren ranking ry, BF ROW fevers case.
