They do not see much “com- promise” in the proposed method of effecting the repeal of the supervisors sections of the re- vised statutes. The democrats agree to do away with deputy marshals for elections, re- move the penalties for the violation of the election laws, and leave only two supervisors, one from each party, at voting places on election day. And these two su- pervisors are to be shorn of all authority which bas heretofore made them powerful | officers of the government. This looks too | one-sided for the republicans to regard the plan in any way as a “compromise.” It is stated that the features of this plan which the joint democratic caucus last Saturday agreed upon was submitted to the President and received his approval. The President has no doubt since the reassembling of Congrest been approached by leaders of the democratic party to ascer- tain his position in regard to the po- Wtieal legislation which rendered necessary the present session.
