Another sufferlng mother enters her protest to-day against the system of overtasking, which compels the children to study at home in hours that should be given to recreation, and which requires the mother to assume the duties of teacher in the home school room. The fauit, however, is not with the teachers, but with the school rules, which prescribe these home studies. In fact the teachers are com- Mon sufferers with the parents in the matter, as they have to give up their spare hours out of School to the examination of the written Work of the pupils. The sooner the school board rescinds these rules, the better. ‘@rne present board ts not responsible for them, as they were adopted some years ago, and should not shoulder the odium of enforcing them @ moment longer than is necessary. Public sentiment is every where demanding a reform in the-school system that gives no attention to the health of the children or the teachers; houses them in damp unventilated rooms filled with sewer cas and other foul vapors; and takes Into account nothing but the enforcement of the hizh pressure process of mental cramming for as many hours of the twenty-four as possi- ble. The following from the New York Herald shows that precisely the same evil complained of in Washington prevails in the schools of New York: “An indignant parent lately complained through the Herald of the severe tasks which school children are compelled to accomplish. ‘The complaint is well founded. Whether edu- cation or mere discipline ts the object of attend- ance at school, neither justifies the physical con- straint and mental exertion to which hundreds of thousands of children are subjected every day. Few soldiers are as severely taxed on the drill ground es many children are in our show schoois and others which aspire to high reputa- tion for order; but, as if this cruel training were not destructive enough of health and sprit, the custom grows more and more popular with teachers to make school hours merely the time for recitation, the lessons to be studied at home. After six hours spent in the school room, and from four to six at study at home, how much time and inclination has a child for recreation? Parents shouid remember that the; po = a. ‘fully a voice upon the course of studies to be followed by th and should reuse to allow ei c! home to be into a school room unless they are themselves going to officiate a3 teachers and save their c} nM from doubled Festraint and double duty.” Senator Cameron seems to be following the ‘Sxample set by Lord Palmerston in resisting the claims of a “ widder” upon his purse for damaged affections and reputation. The ven- erable British statesman was advised by some of his friends to compromise the matter to avoid scandal, but he pluckily refused to pay a penny, and let the case go to the courts, where the claim was ignominiously defeated. Mr. ‘Cameron, unfortunately, seems to have yielded to the extent of paying $1,000 to get rid of the bother, but the widow, in his case, it appears, affected to look upon this as only a small pay- ment on account, and Simon concluded he might as well call a halt then and there. How- ever he may get out of his present troubles, it is pretty certain that for the rest of his life he will bear in mind the sage advice of the Elder ‘Weller, to: “Beware of the vidders.” —<—_—<__—_<o. While Speaker Randall was re-elected on his ‘Own merits, it ts undoubtedly the fact that his ‘success is looked upon by politicians as a very decided indication of the success of Tilden in getting the democratic nomination for the pres- idency. In fact the old political stagers in ‘Washington already put it down as an assured fact that Tilden and Grant will be the party candidates pitted against each other in 1330. ‘The figuring for Tilden is on this base: The Gemocratic party can count upon carrying every southern state and will only need to secure New York and Indiana, and some small state in ad- dition, to get the requisite number of electoral Votes. Itis doubted if there is any other man who would be as sure of carrying New York as ‘Tilden, and of course Hendricks would be a win- ning card in Indiana. Then, it is believed that ‘Tilden would stand a good chance of carrying ‘New Jersey, and a yet better one of California, if that state was not neglected, as the Califor- nia democrats say It was in 1876 under Hewitt’s Management of the national campaign. Thus, With Tilden and Hendricks in the fleld, and with a bold, energetic chairman of the national committee, an easy victory is figured out by these calculators. On behalf of Grant, of course, the figuring 1s reversed, and a nearly solid north is claimed for him, with some inroads upon the south. Whatever may be the results of the nominations, it looks to-day asif Tilden and Grant will be the nominees. ——————~-___. The President’s message is probably the shortest ever sent to a new Congress. shat the shadow of the Capitol and a gang along Pennsylvania avenue, hg commute the picture of picture of good ol ‘old Democtatic times —{Cin, “Tne Comms Commercial isneediessly perturbed. There Gre @ few slouch hats about, but oddly enough many of the wearers are from Ohio and yet further north. In fact, the slouch hat is rather getting to be the national hat by way of revolt from the absurd, stiff, uncomfortable “‘stove- pipe.” Pennsylvania Avenue never in its history presented a better dressed or better mannered Set of promenaders or carriage people than on these fine spring afternoons of i379. There are no gangs of chained chattels to be seen drag- ging their weary way along the Avenue, but every now and then the colored military com- Panties, Masons, Odd Fellows, and other colored associations turn out upon that finest parade Street In the world and make a handsome dls- play in numbers, drill, uniforms, regalias, &¢. and a grander pageant than the Sunday fane- als of Col. The Union flag still waves in Washing- ton, and over both wings of the Capitol, and Jeff Davis has not yet presented his credentials 88U.S. Senator from Mississippt.
