Randall Wins. ‘The opinion expressed in this column that Randall would win in the Speakership contest was verified by the action of the caucus last night. Aside from all other considerations, his eminent fitness for the place makes his election @ matter of public satisfaction. He Is distin- guish@ by fairness in the chair, has excelient controlof the House, and seems to be justly entitied to the credit of guiding lezislation ad- versely to the interests of the jobbers and the lebby generally. Mr. Randali was born in Philadelphia October, 1828, and is, therefore, about 51 yearsold. He was elected to Congress in 1862,and has served continuously in the House ever since. He was made Speaker dur- ing the last session of the 44th Congress; was re-elected Speaker to the 45th; and now suc- ceeds himself for the 46th. His management of his canvass for the Speakership was character- istic of the man,—cool, clear-headed, sagacious. ‘The quiet prevailing about his headquarters doubtless misled some impulsive lookers-on, who thought it indicated inertia or discourage- ment; but for all that, the moves in the game dictated there were those of a master sure of ‘the result. —_____---______ Mr. Blackburn’s speech at the caucus last night, on moving to make the nominatfon of Mr. Randall unanimous, was an exceedingly ‘neat affair and will enhance his reputation. —_—_—$<2- —____ ‘The account of a “strange yellow deposit, Tesembling sulphur,” which fell with the rain of the 16th and 17th insts., reported from Read- ing and Allentown, Pa., calls to mind a similar occurrence about twenty-five years ago, and noticed in Tus Star at that time. Some of the “deposit” was sent tothe late Prof. G.C. Schaeffer, then principal examiner in the Pat- @nt Office. A careful analysis led to the dis- covery that the “deposit” was the pollen of a Species of fir or pine growing in the extreme Borth of Canada and British America, This is ‘our recollection of the fact. A fact well known in history is also that a “deposit” of a red color fell in Europe some four hundred years ago, and was called bloody snow, and to it was ascribed many wars and famines that followed after. The fact that this pollen is of a resinous nature will account for its burning so readily, — or ‘The widow Oliver,—if she is a widow,—may NOt succeed in establishing her title clear toa new husband, but may find one or two old ones; which will answer just as well. —_—_|__—_o-_____ Hello! Mr. Dana, of the New York Sun, 1s the whip at certain Senators who “made themselves offensively conspicvous as Wociferous advocates of Mr. Blackburn about the hotel corridors, the barrooms, and where- ever else they could gather an audience to listen to abuse of Mr. Randall.” He hints at manifestations of want of Senatorial dignity in Connection with “the peculiar institution re- cently removed from the cloak room to the Dasement, the key of which is kept by Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms Christie,” and adds omin- ously “Senators on both sides owe much to the . forbearance of the press, but silence is not al- waysa virtue.” And he says all this in double leaded type to the consternation of the Senators concerned. —_—_—_<o-__ On Sunday last the pictures of the Society of American Artists at New York were exhibited to the public without charge and the rooms were crowded from noon until 6 o’clock, mainly by that class of people who have no holidays ‘but Sunday and no time to visit week-day exhi- Ditions. Many of the number were young men and others who usually spend their Sundays in the streets and parks. The visitors were thor- oughly orderly, and the time occupied there in Viewing these objects of beauty and taste was ‘undoubtedly spent to much better purpose than in almlees loafing upon the street corners. But still more good could be accomplished by open- ing great libraries to the public on Sundays, as has been suggested by Mr. Spofford, of the Congressional Library. This would afford an opportunity for useful reading and research to many who have no time for the purpose during the working hours of the week; and at the same time it would supply a salutary attraction for young men, and save them from drifting into vicious companionship and bad habits, as a relief from the ennui of mere idleness. It will doubtless be sald that the libraries should not be openedon Sunday to take the place of the churches, but it is Probable that those drawn to the libraries would be those who do not now attend churches, and Certainly they would be much more in reach of good influences in the library than in street- loafing or in back-room tippling and gambling. But the libraries might be opened only in the afternoons after the morning service in the churches, and then even this objection would be obviated. —_—__+-_______ ‘The New York World, always famous for its figures, works out the statistics to show that ‘the English loss at the battle of Isandula, where the Zulus cut up the Twenty-fourth regiment, ‘was absolutely much larger than the English ‘Joss at the battle of the Alma, added to the loss of the Allies at Inkermann. Thus the English Joss at Alma (253,) and the allied loss at Inker- Man (462,) foots up $15; while the English loss in the fight at Isandula was 963. Then England 48 Dleeding in money to the extent of $1,250,000 Per month to carry on this war with the de- ‘spised Zulus; so that when election time comes round the warlike policy of Beaconsfield will perhaps be recetved with less favor by the Bri- tish tax-payer than it did lately when he had the prestige of success, both in diplomacy and im the fighting with the Afghans. ts] g, F ii ee aBF, A i fl 4 3 ij g £103 Pa. ave., Washington, >.
