The Friday evenings’ amtt cara seems to be the most popular, and every seat ts filled when there is a dramatic performance. | A MODEL DANCE FOR PROPRIETY AND OXD Wednesday evening of this week the u dance took place in the large hallof the tnstt- tution. On the seats there were over 400 of the patients, with attendants, seated at the ends of the benches. These seats once did gervice in | the galleries of tae Capitol, tn the old Hall of | Representatives. On the stage were seat: Drs. Chase, Witmer, and Slack, and several Ia. die on on and the Crete plant a violinist and cornetist—on the other. One of the physicians acted as ballet maste: ang he appeared to have been born to fe pusiness, as he not only saw that the {107 wag properly s2t, and that each patient ‘,aq a suitable partner, | but be called th> qgures, and took a part in the dance him<<ir, and when not dancing cairied on acouversation with some of the spectators ‘This, however, was not ahard task, for all present seemedto know the rules and to obey thera. Tue custom Is that the sane officers and attendants dance with the insane patients, and thus each couple is ‘arf and ‘arf—one sane and ene insane partner. The manager seated on the stage would give the signal, and immediate- ly in the center aisle the sane and insane were choosing partners, and with more decorum and dignity than isseen at some of our city balls, they would form the sets and on thestriking up of tne music go through the figures. The sets were formed ip the spaces at either end of the hall, usually ten sets of four couple each, on the floor at one time. It was difficult as they went through the mazes of tie dance, to determtae who were the sane and who the insane dancers, except in a few instances wher. some one, by a little extra “heel and toe work,” by some eccen- tricity in the style of dress, or otherwise, would show that In any other it reason was dethroned. place the inference would be that the eccentric dancers had been taking a drop too much. AN ENTHUSIASTIC DANCER. A heavy Irish. woman, a patient of ten or mnore years, attracted most attention by the spirit with which she entered into the exercises. It Is sald that she seems to live only fora chance to dance on Wednesday evenings, and passes most of her time in preparing for it. She is “fat and forty;” but rather too red in the face to fair.” Her attire was adress of red calico, while in her hair was wound a strip of white cotton, She appeared to be the life of the party, being the first on the floor with a partner when the signal was given. At one Ume she walked out in front. of the musicians, and snapping her fin , Called: “A jig! a jig! Give usa jig! Who'll be me partner?” One of the attendants (a capital dancer) volunteered, and another couple faced them, when a jig was capitally executzd; the heavy lady, as she became warmed apie the work, nimbly rattling heel and toe onthe boards. When the muste ceased she seemed beg soap but walking backwards and forwards two or three times exclaiming, “Three cheers for the red, white and biue,” she subsided until another dance was called. “MARTHA WASHINGTON.” Another enthusiastic dancer, but rather more reserved in her manners, was a portly female patient from G wp, Who es that she is “Martha Wi mn,” and in her make- up she essays to that hair bein; character, her ie ‘to resemble the well-known portraits, and her dress pang pure white and Yery plain, as was the case with Mrs. Washing- ton. She delighted in the square dances, and moved through the figures In a very dignified manner, OTHER CHARACTERS, A rather small-sized and homely Irish girl dresced in crimson entered into the Spirit of the | dance, ahd seemed to put her whole effort to it. A lady nearly 70 years old in light berege, wearing a high crown shaped SP, Was also one of the prominent dancers, and although her mind may be out of gear her feet seem to have retained their youthful r. “The Com- mander-in-Cilef and Gen of the Army, and the Admiral of the Navy” was there, and could always be seen on the fioor when re Was a dance, —— generally one of the handsomest ladies present as a part there were many who did not dance, amonz them a clerical-looking individual formerly a prominent clerk in the Treasury department, ard a fine-looking old gentleman formerly a professor in one of tie western colleges. Be sides the jig, a quadrilie, the lancers, an old- time square set and the waltz were on the pro- gramme. About 9 o'clock" the musicians struck up “Home, Sweet Home,” and the inmates marched out, all rising and filing out in regular order. Washington Market, Retail Prices. The Sun says: “Dr. Hillery testified that Lannahan grabbed the $160 while witness was changing the money from his vest pocket to another part of his clothing. Accused handed the money to a con- federate, who ran out of the car into another, and, withess believed, left the train at Fulton station. The affair occurred near Bowie station. W. E. Lefrew, of Richmond, Va., testified that Dr. Hillery told him on the train that he had Won $10, but that $100 had been taken from hin Mr, Lefrew thought Dr. Hillery meant, that he had won the $10 at gaming. Lannahan, the risoner, stated to the justice that he and Dr ery were gaming, but the Doctor denied having said anything to Mr. Lefrew about win- ning $10. Justice Johns, however, entered an- other charge against Lannahan, of winninz $100 at a game of cards, and committed him on bath charges for a further hearing this morning, when the conductor of the train will give nis testimony.
