Among these was a ‘treatise upon the excessive mortality of infants isthe cities of the United States, which at- ‘racted very general attention of the profession and the health authorities of our larger cities, He was the first to suggest sanitariumsorcamp3 Incool elevated rural places or on the sea- shore for the poor or sick children of cities to resort to during the hot months of summer. ‘This suggestion has won adherents and has been put in practice to some extent by New York, Philadelphia and Boston. An able paper written by him on the natural history and geo- graphical distribution of yellow fever in the United States, from the settlement of the coun- try until 1574, with maps and tables, has had a wide circulation and furnished data for much that has since been written upon the subject. ‘To afford the data to the profession tostudy the effects of altitude, temperature and rato-fall upon the healthof various localities, Dr. Toner prepared and published a Dictionary of Eleva- tions and Climatic Register of the United States. Following up this line of studies, his address as President of the American Public Health Asso- ciation in 1576, reviewed most of the important public health questions of the day. Both from long study and close observation, he is excep- tionally well qualified to act upon these mat- | } ters on a National Board of Heaith. ‘The indications are increasing that the extra Session will be alongone. Some well-informed Congressmen think it may last till the time for the regular session in December. Those who have rooms to rent should therefore advertise the fact for the benefit of those who are already here on the look-out for cool, pleasant summer quarters. ————_+ In Brooklyn, New York, 45,000 parcels of land are now subject to sale for arrears of taxes, as- Sessments and water. There are no buyers, and the city has to take them without achance for realizing on them. The same condition of affairs exists in this District, where a large proportion of the real estate put up for sale for arrears of taxes has been bid in by the District government for want of purchasers, M4= PARIS EID GLOVE DEPOT.
