Mand N. eae dail additions to our now S are making daily ‘The evidences of the collapse of the Green- | beteaine many “ceeirable fabrics. back party are shown in the result of the mu- if Bicipal elections in Maine last Monday. The greenbackers, headed by Solon Chase, a month ago inaugurated a spring political campaign, imported speakers from abroad, and vigorously employed home talent, and came out with bands of wusic, filling hatls and headquarters with their followers. The republicans made no special efforts to counteract: the activity of the greenback fusionists. and the defeat of the lat- ter, therefore, at all points shows their natural decline. The republicans have regained Lewis- ton; the soft-money doctrine has been com- pletely repudiated in Auburn,—the birthplace of “flatism” in Maine. The council of Portiand j is republican. Brunswick, Bath, Topsham, Gardiner, Readfeld, ‘Saco Kennebunk, Keane- bunkport, Sumner, Rockland, Bucksport, Nor- way, Ellsworth Bethel, and other places, all go the same way in repudiation of ragmoney. The result of these local elections shows for one | thing that the greenback anticipation that fu- | sionism would entirely absorb the democrats 13 | unwarranted. Quite a number of democrats voted the republican and hard-money ticket. 1 As the greenback party in Maine was a twin | brother of the party in the neighboring state of | Massachusetts, the collapse of the one is omin- ous of the fate of the other. Counting upon the fact that some half a dozen democratic Congressmen are just now sick or disabled, the republicans and nationals are specuiating hopefully upon the eee of be- ing able to control the organization of the House. They are probably enumerating thelr adolescent. hens beforé they are incubated. | WHITE. BLACK AND COLORED FBENOH CHIP ‘The democrats are famous for bringing their siek men up to the polls. They have promptly warned the Washington doctors not tolet any more democrats die on their hands until after a Speaker iselected. Dr. Garnett, who as an old | BN as assortment in the city, at the lowest democrat, has political as well as professional zealin the matter, evidently means to have Representative Acklen in voting condition on the isth. ——___<s-_*._ A correspondent makes the proper suggestion that our influential citizens should urge upon the President the importance of making special mention to Congress of the need of action for ereased water supply and for the abatement of the river flats nuisance—especially the lat- ter. Itismore than probable that when the Warm weather fairly opens, the offensive odors from the fecal sewage deposits upon the flats will powerfully reinforce any recommendations the President may make for Congressional ac- fion. If this malarial nuisance is not abated, members of Congress may expect to have more Sickness in their ranks during the extra ses- | sion than they have the past winter. And as | the President and the Cabinet officers will be kept in tne city during the session it is natural that they should feel a lively interest in the matter. The White House and the Treasury, ‘War and Navy departments are all situated im- mediately in the neighborhood of these sewage | deposits that threaten a pestilence, and it is Proper that the occupants of these bulldings should ask for the immediate abatement of the evil, —_-++- —___ According to the New York Evening Post, the general feeling amongst business men there is that bottom has been reached in prices, and a reaction has set in. The probability Is that more dwelling-houses will be built in that city during i879 than have been erected | during any previous year. At present, Inquiry with reference to real estate and dwelling-bouses by persons now living in New York or the suburbs is very active, and even by capitalists living in other cities, Rents and prices will in all probability remain substantially the same as last year. ‘There is a clamor for lower rents and lower prices, but owners are unyielding, and last year’s prices will doubtless be given and re- ceived. It is noted that there is much inquiry Made about real estate by capitalists from other cities with a view to investment. On the east Side there has for some time been remarkable activity in building, and now, in view of the approaching completion. of the.west side ele- Vated roads, much building ts going on on the West side also. ——_——_++-____ An ex-journalist of Cincinnati, who wants to show his disapproval of the denunciation of the medical fraternity of the west for procuring ‘subjects for dissection, has willed his corpse to the Medical College of Ohio for the benefit of medical science. One of the conditions of the bequest is that the body, or skeleton shall, be- come a permanent fixture of the college, and that it shall be properly labeled with a copy of the will attached. As he is apparently under contract to drink all the whisky in the Miami Valley, the college people expect that the Dequest will be available quite speedily. ee Judge Giles of the U.
