Covert, democrat, 1st district, regards Tilden as having the vantage points tn his or in the state. S. Cox, dem- | Ocrat, 6th district, “excused himself from an tnterview, alleging that his time was altogether | taken up in advocating the census bill.” Jere- miah W. Dwight, republican. »sth district, thinks | Grant is probably the strongest man in the Benedict. di q district, | Tilden fs the surest man for the democ- racy to win with, Solomon Bundy, republican, 2ISt district, isof the impression that Blatne will | be the coming man of the repub! party,— | that he is nearer the hearts of the people than | any man inthe party. Anson G. McCoo! publican, sth district, “stands by General Gr: to renew the enthusiasm and victory o| and 1872 In the Presidential election of 1850." S L. Mayham, democrat, 15th district, thinks Mr. ‘Tilden would certainly be a strong candidate | for governor, but whether he would be as | strong outside of New York as in the State he has “‘reasonable doubts. ‘nolas Muller, democrat, 5th district, “declined to be inter- viewed.” George W. Patterson, republican, 33d | district, thinks Blaine has greater advantages a popular candidate then Grant. J. H.Starin, | republican, 20th district, “ was not prepared to express views upon the subject.” Martin I. ‘Townsend, republican, 1ith district, thinks Grant, Blaine, Sherman, or Evarts, may be the man, but that he has lived so-long tn this | world that he had “learned ite folly of building Presidents in the air.’ Andrew Wil- liams, republican, Isth district, thinks if | the convention were to meet in March Grant would undoubtedly be nominated: and sees no reason why he should not have a third term. B. A. Willis, democrat, 11th dis- trict, says: “If the wishes of the rank and tiie of the party are regarded and the work of | schemers is thwarted, Allen G. Thurman will doubtless be heartily supported by the state of New York, and if nominated would have no difficulty in securing its thirty-five electoral votes.” Fernando Wood, democrat, 9th dis- trict, does not indicate his preferences, but hopes the strongest and most available men in the party will be selected. It will be seen that so far as an expression of opinion is reached as to the views of the Con- gressmen of the pivotal state, Grant has a shade of preference on the republican side, though Blaine follows very closely; while on the democratic side T:lden has the lead, though 4 the endorsements of him are by no means en- thusiastic, and are coupled with a good many | “ifs” and “buts.” Thurman gets one vote and Vice President Wheeler one. —___~++-____—_ Mr. Blaine, with his fertility of resourcesand skiliin handitng facts and figures, has made the most of a bad cause tn working up the Cht- nese panic, and in defending the bunkum po- iitical-capital raid upon the immigrant China- men; but he has somehow overlooked some very essential data in the question. The N. Y. Tri- bung calls his attention to the figures showing the exact number of Chinese coming to and going from the United States for the six months ending with December last. From these it ap- pears that the total of Chinese arriving in that time was 1,955, while the number leaving the country for home was 4,646; in fact that more than double as many Chinese are leaving as are coming. At this rate it will be some time be- fore Mr. Blaine’s fearful picture of the country overrua by the hordes of dissolute pig-tails, and American toll ruined by Chinese free labor, will be realized. The oppressed tobacco raise! S, dealers and consumers of the country, the story of whose woes has moved Congress to reduce the tax on that article, may console themselves, amid all the dimicuities of their present hard lot, with the reflection that they are fortunate in living im this country instead of Germany. Bismarck is firm in his determination to ralse large rev. enues by a taxation of tobacco as high as can be borne. Where nearly every one Is a great tobacco consumer, as in Germany, there is of course much opposition to any such plan.
