THE City Post OFFICE SITE—Meetiny of Busi: ness Men Last Night.—Last night a meeting of business men was held at a hall on Peansyl- Vania avenue, vetween 6th and 7th strects, to give expression to their views upon the subject of the new site for the city post oflice. Mr. Jesse B. Wilson presided, with Mr. Horatio Browning as secretary. Mr. John E. The Centennial building was unfit and too far away from the business center of the city. The removal from the present loca- Uon savors of a job for some one. Col. Davis said that protests by the citi- zens of this District went very little way with Congress. The committtees of Congress say they are Sick of hearing citizens of this District. A committee of citizens had already waited on the committee on public buildings and grounds. It been determined from the start to take the Cen- tennial building. Gen. Brady, of Indiana, Mr. McArthur, of Philadelphia, and Capt. Sanger. of Georgetown, not one of’ them representing the people of this District, selected that site. Hon. Mr. Blair, of Maryland, and Mr. Clark, architect of the Capitol, Were the only members of this committee who knew anything about tbe wants of the people, and they refused to sign In favor of the Centennial building, and recommended the space in front of the Centre Market. Resolutions were adopted “that there is no public necessity for the removal of the elty post office from its present location; that to those having authority and power to control the re moval of sald office and decide upon a position we recommend the location of the office som where between 6th and Sth streets northwe. near Pennsylvania avenue, where the greai business interests of the citizens of Washington are centered.” Messrs. if. The Post Office Question. ‘itor of The Star:—Your widely circulated ts al ‘Serer the advocate of fair play; hence trouble you with this epistle. The Republican of this morning contains what pt rts to be a meeting of prominent citizens held at Shea’s hall for bes yy ot | fea | against the location of the city post office west of 9th street. J. B. Wison was called io the chair, and Mr. Horatis Drowning made secretary. Both these gentlemen have stores near the corner of ith street and Pennsylvania avenue, and are of Lawyer Nor- ris made a speech, in which he contended that there were only two places fit for it—one the square west of the eae office, the other at ith street and Pennsylvania avenue—and wound up by saying there was no necessity for a remeval, “unless there was a job in it.” Just bere, Mr. Editor, I give a quotation from the petition circulated by the a holding this meeting, which looks more Iti has appeared elsewhere: “If the occupancy of these reservationsshould be deemed impracticable, we beg to call your attention to the property owned by the Bank of Washington, and the two butldings adjacent thereto, covering an area of about 15,00 Squai feet, which can be had at a reasonable pric and also the property at the northwest eorne of 7th street and Market EEA, and the Si Mare Hotel property, ¢ nue and ith street. S. ts a direc- tor and stockholder in the market company, some envious peopie might say his advics was that of an interested pariy. I do not, but sug- gest that it would be eared to put the city Post office on the south side of the avenue and subject every man, woman and child to being run over, even to oblige the market company and enable them to get rid of a bad bargain. Mr. E. G. Davis, who has a fancy store at stn ‘Street. and Market Space, was also disinterested. He represented 100,00) people and had no prop- erty to dispose of, and attacked the majority of the commission, who had been so rash as to differ with him, and the corn-fed solons_assocl- ated with him, viz., McArthur, of Phtladelp.ta, who has charge of all the state and governinent buildings, who disbarses yearly more than any other architect in the country, who declined the office of supervising architect of the Treasury when tendered him; saptain Sanger, for 4s yearschief engineer of the Navy depart:nent: and Gen, Brady, Second Assistant Postmaster pneral; all government Officials, unbiased by any local prejudice or feeling, and thea the meeting adopted resolutions that no removat was necessary, thereby giving the Postmaster General-the Ile direet, Who not only in his an- nual report, but in am e to Congress, has urged that provision be made for removing the post office, and that the best interests of the service demand It. i submit that the three tailorsof Tooley street.
