The proposal has so far aroused the people that the courts have been called on to adjudicate the question, and an injunction has been obiained against holding the election. SIE FOWLER Cannot be accused of a mer- motive in trying to compel Jas. W. Val to marry her. Vale is a wealthy banker in Port Washington, Wis. Miss Fowler was his child- ren’s teacher, he being a widower. He proposed marriage, but afterward changed bis inind. Miss Fowler employed a lawyer to sue Vale for damages, hoping to bring about a marriage in that way, but Vale readily pald on demand the 5.00 that was asked. That put a civil suit out of the question. Miss Fowler made an appeal to Vale to keep lls promise, but he refused. Then Sne sent the $5,000 back to him, and swallowed a fatal dose of poison. A Wipowsr in Lawrence, Kan., was engaged to a widow, but lis love was so languid tuat he Was in no hurry to be married. A friend from Ottawa visited him, fancied the widow, and Said that he would like her for a wife. The widower offered to sell his right to her for $250, and the money was Fp the widow marrying the Ottawa man and going home with him. But the widower's love was warmed by absence. He went to Ottawa, courted the woinan anew, and eloped with her.
