There is reason io suspect that the highlanders of Breathitt, not content with kill. ing each other, have been in the habit of mur- dering stray travelers. The state prosecutor has learned that several wayfarers, after hay- Ing lodged in certain cabins at night, disap- peared on the next day and were never heard of afterward. The thabitants of Breathitt county are so ignorant that they seem not to be aware that the late civil war ended in the overthrow of the confederacy. Green was supposed to be a suitor to Miss Elizabeth Smith, of Third avenue, until he married a neice of School Commisstoner George W. Smith, of Portchester. He afterward moved to Bridgeport, Conn., and became the chiet clerk in the Baine Tea Company’s store. George W_Smith died on Saturday last, and the pub- lished notice caught the eye of the family of the jilted Miss Smith, and supposing that Green would attend the funeral of hts father-in-law, and thus be obliged to pass through this city, a ‘warrant that had been issued in last June was taken from its pigeon-hole, and on it the arrest = was made in the Grand Central depot. Green was arraigned in the 5ith-street police court yesterday on a charge of improperly abandon- ing Miss Smith.
