Turning Felons Loose on the Com- munity. ae) Editer Star:—Reading in your last night's issue of the discharge of a pickpoe’ ma jail by Judge Humpnreys, several taquiries suggest ed themselves to me. Here was a fellow arrest ed and on hiin found four or five poc’ Rinas and contents, three of which were ideat little girls, daughters of our most resp citizens, as having been stolen from them 01 a few minutes previously in the marxet house he is convicted and sent to jail, aad the com- munity relieved tor eighteen moaths, at least, 3 a nuisance and our streets by night a terror to Jadies and children. Now, our sympathetic lady lawyer raises the point that it was one offence, and asks the dis- charge and gets it, as if three or more parties could have peckets rifled by the same man the same Ume. To the average mind th like trifling with justice. No grounds were as- signed by the justice for his action. Now, I would like to ask what right has Judge Hum- phreys has to discharge a convict under tence, when no error appears on the record? If he has that right, what is the use of the par- doning power in the Executive? If he can do it in @ ease of petit larceny, he can do it in a case of murder or rape. and nothing {s to prevent all the convicted felons from being turned loose on us, but a failure on their part to ask Judge Tl. tolet them out. And if thieves are to be re- leased whenever our eccentric jndze feels sifti- ciently in the pardoning humor, why not dis- yense with courts and juries? Orvis, A Complaint. Eciter Star:—Is tt exactly the fair thing for Dr. Lord to invite an audience comgosed of all denominations to lsten to a leeture on Madame de Maintenon, and then take the oce attack, directly and by inuendo, the Roman Catholic church? The silence with whic’ these remarks were received would indicate that they gave no pleasure to the large audience pre All well-informed minds are aware that the very source from which he gets his information is found in the archives of the chureh he revi'es, and the characters on whose gifted natures be builds his lectures we with but few tons, members of the Roman faith. ‘The taste impelling him to abuse the means that enab'es him to make a handsome living 1s at least qnes- tionable.
