I found myself one day in a Kansas town where I knew no one, and with some eight hours to pass before I could continue my jour- ney. A sign with the words “The — Pritting Ofiice” caught my eye, and, being an old news- paper man, it was peculiarly attractive to ine under the circumstances. I knocked at the door, which was opened by a man in gray cloth- ing. He answered my request to see the editor by pointing to a rather shabbily dressed but wide-awake individual seated at a table in the rear of a large room. ‘This was the editor, and, having removed his corn cob pipe, he was ad- dressing the man in gray clothes with the fol- lowing remarl ‘John, Tam d—d if you don’t take a crowd over, if we don’t get waxed as sure as h—1,” evidently referring to a country political meeting. On one side of the editor a Solitary compositor was busily at work. A hand press stood in the center of the room, and 09 a pile of exchanges, seemingly the accumulation of years, was seated a boy about 10 years old, book in hand. Going towards the editor and modestly ate myself, I was tnvited to take a seat, when the editor continued his re- marks to his friend at the door as follows “John, we had better look sharp, now. Don’t for- t to take over a crowd or they’ll lick us, sure. ‘hen turning to me: “When did you les Washington. It’s a d—d fine city, Ym told.” ‘Then to the boy: “Henry, pay attention to your book. THE GREAT WANT OF KANSAS at this time, with all their railroad enterpiises, seems to be means to take their crops to mar- ket. Senator Ingalls, in his speech at the Neosho Valley Fair at Neosho Falls, a tew weeks since, called attention to this want, say- ing that, while they were all beneiitted by rail- roads, it had been found that they could not carry the heavy crops—such as wheat, corn and other staples—at such rates as to leave a remu- nerative price to the producer; that cheap river or canal transportation should be fostered, and the rivers should be improved, either by the national orstate government, to give factliti the farmer for shipping his grain. There is but. little doubt that, with the rich lands to be touad here, more can be brought out of the land ti: in the east, with less effort; but when the is raised the prices obtainable are very low, the question comes, how to dispose of whe crop to the best advantage. Many of those who raise coru, finding it brings but 15 cents_per bushel, feed ft to their hogs. When these bring, as at present, only two Cents per pound, they try to cipher out whether they have made anythin; except an opportunity to save freight—naving converted tncir grain into a shape in whi can walk to market. “HARD TIME: The fact is not to be disguised, that there « some settlers here who would gladly return 9 the older portions of the country if they cou! sell out, but the proportion of dissatistied peo, is not greater than ts found In any new coin And while as at ihe east there ts some cry hard times many of the people endorse t remarks of an Indianian, whosaid: “I supp se times are in my state like they are every where, but T don't know any farmer who has not mite more thanhe ean Dossibly constune, and so.ne surplus to buy what he has noi raised. [teil you when some of us can’t get the highost prices for what we sell, and buy what we waut at the very lowest we are apt to ery ‘hard umes.’ I am tired of such nonsense and am thankful for what I have, and [ think if we would be willing to ave and take and aecopt the situation we could all get along bette who have a moderate fortunein the e may certaii of re t inly make it hold out in Kansas, for with flour at $1.50 to $2 per hundred, butter 10 cents per pound, beef and pork 6 to 10, chickens: 10 to 123g, and eggs5-cents per dozen, one miy live like a prince at a small cost. Nearly ne engaged In farming 1s also early every one en; vming 1s als in the business of stock raising, and herds of cattle are to be seen on the prairies. This is @ profitable business, and not only men aid boys, but in some cases women, engage in it. It is related that a family near this place had the misfortune to lose the services of the bus- band and father, whose mind became deranged, and then the mother died, leaving two young daughters and a small son. this time neither the land, house or stock had been paid for, but being girls of true grit, one found em- ployment as a school teacher in the Indian n tion, and sending her earnings to her sister and brother, they have been invested in cattle, and the result has been that in about four years, by the increase and sale of stock, they have paid off the indebtedné and are now in compar- atively comfortable circumstances.
