Stone, the clerk, [Raker telete in his night clothes, and believed that Mrs. Tarleton and infant, of St Inigoes, passengers, were lost at the outset of the disaster. Mr. Douglass secured a piece of plank from the saloon and floated from the Wreek. He saw Capt. Barker and others do the same, but in the confusion could not make out definitely who they were. At daybreak he couid not certainly make out any person as afloat on the wreck stuff. What might look like a manor woman may only have been some furniture or cargo buffeted by the waves. He drifted about for seven hours, until early in the afternoon of Wednesday, when, benumbed and almost ex- hausted, with the Slender plank going to pieces in his ras p, on which life alone depended, he was pick up by the schoouer and kindly treated by C: Parks, who also rescued Capt. Barker and a colored passenger. The crew the schooner told Mr. Douglass that boats from the propeller Shirley, then ashore on Barrei Island, had gone out and saved seven men, in- eluding the Clerk, Mr. Stone, John Douglass, the other quartermaster, and brother to the nar- rator, and at least four colored people, but of the correctness of this information he had no vor, While 1 morning } a schooner picking up and other freight that had belonged to the wreck, and the vessel paid no attention to him in. his’ perilous situation, nor made any effort to save his life. Welch agt. the District. of Columbia, dismissing the bill. This was a bill for an injunction to restrain the collection of taxes for Povomac water, on the ground that in Georgetown the whole cost of laying the mains Was paid for at & cents per foot, in four annual installments, the conditions being that they would not be charged water rents, and they should have free water forever. In the court below the restraining order was dissolved. The court dismisses the bill on the principle that a corporation has no power to exempt the cit- ens trom payment of just dues accruing after its official death. ——_—___ ‘RO OUTLAWS SHOOT aT a WoMAN.—About * o'clock last night two unknown colored men Walked into the store of John Hays, corner of ist and B streets northwest, and ‘called for whiskey, which being refused, they began to be troublesome and created a’ disturbance tor which they were put out by Mr. Hays and his wife.
