He recommends the erection of additional school buildings and the adoption of a compulso: tion as means of improving this poor s which he ascribes mainly to a lack of apprecia- tion by the Indiansof the value of education. ‘There is no question that the Winneb: have made such rapid strides in civilization in the last few years should be expected to at themselves toa greater extent of their edu tional zdvantages. They support themselves, hold lard patents in many instances for the soil which they cultivate, live in housesof theirown, ed individual wealth to the amount 4, and are ready, after certain prelim!- . for nam ation. Since the average at- tendance of pupils is smaller than the num €nrolled, allowance must be made for this fact in the comparison, as it is the average attend- ance which fs takenasa basisamong the Winne- Dagoes; but this consideration favorable to the Indians is at least counterbalanced by the fact that many of the children in the states men- Uoned are sent to private schools. Is Boston ready to endanger its alleged intellectual superiority among cities by Subjecting the brains of its citizens to the dete- riorations which an imposing array of New York doctors has pronounced to be the inevitable Tesult of the noise and jar of elevated railways? Rapid transit saves time, and if it were certain that intellectual and physical well-being suf- fered, our national hurry would lead us to adopt allsuch schemes of utilizing every minute pos- sible. Her mines are said to verify the prediction of Humboldt, that they would be found richer than the richest of Mexico. While the gieat Comstock vein is worked at an ex- pense of thirty dollars per ton, an expense of five dollars per ton is said to be the maximum cost of mining and milling the ores from the Arizona mines. The veinsare said to be of great Width, permanency and freedom from breaks, to be rich in gold, stlver and copper, which tn: crease in amount as greater depthsare attained, but to be free fromthe baser metals. The niines are praised as being easily worked, and at small expense compared with those of Colorado or Nevada, as being well supplied with wood and water, and as lying in a region which boasts the finest climate in the world. When these facts become generally known the depopulation of the east through the rush to Arizona of victims of the mining fever will be a natural consequence. It may not be premature to bezin calculations immediately as to the political complexion of the Senate and House delegations from the pro- Spective state. We hope that these glowing de- Scriptions of the Arizona mines are not over- drawn. ——__~+--___ ‘The descriptions of tron-clad cars of ingent- ‘ous construction, built to baffle the train rob- bers of the far west, no less than the accounts Teceived from time to time of successful assaults by these desperadoes, indicate that if the age of highwaymen has gone, the desperate and reckless spirit of that period fs still alive and ‘shows itself when the conditions are favorable, ‘In the ‘expanse of our territory, we have the crimes of the middle ages as well as those of modern, civilized times. We have the train rob- ber, with his “stand and deliver,” as well as the embezzler and defaulter who substitute craft for force. And yet we are not proud. ————— BEST READING.
