(Groner Brosera, A Romance of the Epidemic. A wedding took place on Adams street yes- terday afterncon under circumstances sur- rounded by oodles of romance. Several weeks ago Dr. W. F. Besancny, a young physician hailing from Jonestown, Miss., oflered his services to Medical Dirécior Mitchell. His credentials were perfect, andcoming at a time when physicians were’ most needed, were readily accepted. Just as all the preliminaries had been settled satisfactorily, a messen, entered the office in great haste in search of @ vo ee ang to attend Miss D. P. Rutter, a — ady who had been stricken with the fever, her residence on Adams street. Dr. Mitchell turned to the gallant young physician, and remarked that he could immediately be vlaced on duty if he so felt disposed. Dr. Besaneny unhesitatingly accepted ths and at oree accompanied the messei fo the young lady vhere found her prostrate with a bad case of fever. It is unnecessary to go through the detail of the lingering illness, but only to say that the young doctor's atiention was close and faithful, finally resulting in the young lady's recovery. Soon afierward the doctor was stricken down. True to the instincts of her womanly nature, doubly itensified by her self acknowledzed indebtedness to him for having saved her life, she went to his bedside, and there remained, giving such attention as only & Woman can_ bestow upon the sick, until the glad tidings was announced that he had. passed the crisis, and bid fair to recover. He assed through ‘the tedious hours of conv: Feseence until entirely recovered. Nothing more Was known or thought of the matter by the few inmates or friends of the young lady until yesterday afternoon, when the doctor. accompanied Esquire Quigley and a few friends, drove up to the residence, and in less time than it takes us to write this paragraph, the two were joined together in the holy bonds of wediock. Such a union, consummated under such circumstances, cannot fail to abound with happiness. and, being somewhat superstitious ourself, we Know of good luck — (Memphis Appeal. residence, Mrs. Hirrie’s MuscLe—How a Woman Knocked One Tramp Senseless and Made Another Beg for Mercy.—Racine can now come out and claim one of the pluckiest, if not the pluckiest, little woman in the state. Her name is Barbara Hittle, and she lives on the west side of the city. Barbara has always been noted among the neighbors as being cS woman of wonderf urage and pluck, but she never brought it in’ i ay and made a he- roine of herself until Friday night, when she won a victory over two strong tramps. It seems tramps, beggars, &c., have been very annoying of late in the neighborhood where the lady referred to resides, but never tried to force things until on the evening above men- tioned, when two burly ruffians made their appearance at Barbara's house, and asked for something to eat. They were invited in anda nice supper set before them, of which they partook freely. When they ha4 finished they did not thank the kind-hearted lady for her javor, but proceeded to take improper liber- ties with her, Did she call for help when the ans did so? Oh, no. She merely gee] a large oak club that was lying near by, and with the first blow she knocked one of the fel: Jows senseless on the floor, and mauled the other fellow unmercifully until he begged piteously for mercy, and the brave little wo- man ceased to beat him. Tien she took the one sie had knocked senseless and dragged Lim out of doors, where she soused him with a pail of slops that was standing near by, which soon brought him around, and he left ina hurry as his companion had doue previously. If there is a woman who could have done bet- ter than this in the state, Racine people would like to hear from her.—[Miaaukee ( Wis.) Sentinel. GERMAN SOctALIsM.—It is proposed by cer- tain parties, says the Saturday Review, to remove the material causes of socialism’ by removing the poverty wiich disposes so many Germans to be discontented with the existiny order of things, and for that reason disposed to examine with curiosity, if with no warmer feeling, every proposal, however wild, which aims at making things better. Here, how- ever, the policy of material improvement comes into direct conflict with Prince Bis- marck’s whole management of foreign affairs. They then whispered the matter to each other, paid the fees and left, looking very happy. C aeaEnneEeeeee MARRIED. BYRNES—WISE. October 10th. 1878, at St. Aloysius Church, by Bev. Father Forhan, 8.
