The frightful condition of things on our fiver front, as described in Tue Star a few days ago, is naturally attracting a good deal of attention in various quarters. N>> more than the vital importance of the case demands, howtver. The picture was a most repulsive one. as most readers may remember; bit that it was not overdrawn is abundaatly demoa- strated by the evidence in another column of today’s paper, furnished by a tleman fully competent to speak intelligently on the | Subject. This correspondent, it will be se charges furthermore that much of the di culty in the ease is caused by the action of } certain contractors, who dump their dredgings in the mouth of the Washington channel, thus obstructing turning aside the current, which, if not interfered with and changed in this way, would carry down the river a great Part if not allof the foul deposit now lying dormant in front of the city to breed disease and death in our midst. charge, we may add, seems a'most tco. ferribdle to be believed : but. whether it be true or not, or from whatever cause the nuisance arises, it is clearly apparent that Washington owes her exemption from a fatal seonrge last summer entirely to good luck, or rather to the mercy of Heaven, and not tothe care and ef- Zorts of those in authority. But because this ‘agency has carried us safely through the late heated term, it will not do to rely upon it ex- elusively for immunity in the future. N. does not allow her laws to be continual Jated or ignored without exacting a penaity, and her pugishments in such cases are apt to be both certain and severe, as the sad history of many a southern town bears testimoay. It is too much. therefore, to hope to get through another season without a pestilence, unless the whole reeking mass of filth and poleon is - entirely removed before next summer. Aud in this view of the case it is hardly less fortu- Hate that this hot bed of disease has been ex- Posed in time for effective action than that We have thus far escaped the natural results of its existence. But while there is ample time, if vigerous efforts be made, there is not a mo- ment to lose. Prompt and energetic steps must be taken to remove every vestige of this sickening deposit before the hot suns of next Summer quicken it into active poison, or Washington may expect to be visited with a Destilence as sweeping in its character and as fatal in its effects a3 that now carrying away whole populations in the southwest. Fore- Warned is forearmed. Let our authorities be wise and active in time. The revolution in Colorado failed to come to time. There seems to be no doubt that the re- publicans have elected state officers, a Con- gressman, and the legislature, which is to choose a United States Senator. Patterson, the democratic candidate for Representative, who was beaten in the election for the last House, but was seated over Belford by a par- tisan vote, deserves the defeat which he has received. As the republican party in the state did not take the same bold stand on the car- reney question as their brethren in Maine, the result is not so conclusive an indication of the greenback strength in the locality. But the third party is never likely to be strong among the producers of gold and silver bullion and those connected with them. Inasmuch as there 1s some question as to the legality of the late increase of the salaries of the Attorney for the District and his assistant, hadn't the Commissioners better give the pub- ile the benefit of the doubt, and reduce the pay in both cases to the old rate? That would pe the simplest and best way of disposing of the matter —except to reduce both toa figure even below the salary formerly paid in each case. Or, the Commissioners might give the Service out by contract, to the lowest bidder, as is done with other work. Why not, to be Sure? Why shouldn't there be competition in law as well as in paving, sewer-building, street-repairing, and scavenger duty? Is the Jegal profession hedged round by any sort of divinity, that it should be exempted from the vos which are applied to other pursuits in life? Seriously, however, the present is a time for cutting down, instead of increasing, official salaries, and especially in cases where only a* part of the time is given to public duties, as With the attorneys in question. The Commis. sioners should not hesitate, therefore, to per- form a substantial ag of justice toan already over-taxed community by reconsidering their action which proposed to increase the salaries referred to. No hardship whatever can result from such a step. As has already been said, if the present incumbents feel that their ser- ‘vices are worth more than the old salary they Can resign, and plenty of other lawyers abun- danily capable of filling the placas can easily be found who will be glad to take them, not ‘only at the rate of compensation heretofore fixed, but in fact at a figure considerably be jow that sum. What do y: gentlemen? Opinion seems to be somewhat divided as to whether the tax-payers of Newport, who ob- tained an injunction against the city authori- ties to prevent them paying out of the city faxes the expenses of the entertainment of the | British Admiral Inglefield, should bs frowned down as wretches who parade their meanness and lack of publie-spirit to our diseredit before the wor'd, or encouraged in the interests of economy and reform in municipal administra- tion. However the question be decided, Ad" miral Inglefield will no doubt be sorry that Newport was so hospitable, and Newport will regret that it played the host. Russia's explanation of the presence of her mission at Afghanistan is perhaps offered on the principle that a poor excuse Is better than Bone. If the mission was determined upon at aditterent time aud under differeat circum- stances, why could not the decision to send it have been reversed when the circumstances changed? The dispatch of an embassy to Cabul, after agreeing to renounce all political influence in Afghanistan, is not excusable_as “an act of courtesy to the Ameer.” As the object for which it was sent has now been ac- complished, it is probable that Russia’s con- science will be quickened as to the binding force of existing engagements, and that the Mission will be withdrawn. ——————<-e-—__ The Washington correspondent of the Pitts. burg Chronicle rates General Butler's real estate possessions in this city at one million dollars. Weare much afraid he doasn’t pay taxes on that amount. Whether Acklen is or is not the handsomest man in Congress, as is claimed by his friends, he seems to be paying the usual price of the fatal gift of beauty.
