OsE SOURCE OF HARD TrmEs.—S) tbe vast—and toa great extent avoidavle—te- struction of property by fire in this country, the Fireman says that fires are increasin’, both in number and destructiveness, far more rapidly than the increase of wealth and pro- duction. It is computed that from an annual loss by fire in 1868 of $35,008,000, the annual loss, exclusive of Sip fires such as Boston and Chicago (if they may be called “excaptional’), has increased to $10),(x),000. The full oes of this statement cannot be realized unless analyzed. This loss is the irremediable loss of human product and in- dustry. Itis the conversion of human blond, brawn and muscle, necessary to create #1()),- 3,000 of value into ashes and smoke, As. suming the labor that produced this value to be worth $3 per day, this loss is the loss of more than the combin ed labor of 100,000 men for one entire year. Then, too, it must be re- membered that this is surplus production. It has been accumulated by producers after earning livelihoods for themselves and fami- lies, and paying their share of the cost of gov- erninent and their — of the burdens of society. It would require, then, the labor of 100,000 men for twenty years to replace by surplus production this annual loss. It is not only so much wealth subtracted from the re- sources of the country, but it is the loss of the Productive power of so much capital. A HERO OF THE PRESENT.—We clip the fol- lowing from the Lynchburg Virginian: When yellow fever broke out in Portsmouth in S55, @ young man, Mr. Samuel Cutherell, donee unincumbered, refused to leave, but nvrsed in the terribly infected hospitals until stricken down himself. Cheerful and deter- mined, he recovered and nursed on until “the pleas was stayed” and his city free. When he war broke out he went to the front and ex- hibited the same cheerful, fearless devotion and disregard of danger. In this service he contracted violent rheumatism, which has left the maiks of its vielence on his brave limbs. And now, a man of ey he passed throng) this city on lis =. to pote gaa to heip that stricken people as a nurse. He spoke to a {lend cheerfully of his determination to fight the yellow fever from city to city till relieved of his self imposed labors by victory or death. It is very hard in these selfish days to find = men. but it is something for the Amer- nig to remember with ae that some aa and women have been found equal to every emergency, however dire the calamily or UW sperate the issue: THE GRowTH OF Kansas.—None of the western states have enjoyed such a phenom. aking of enal growth in population as Kansas, if ~ figures given by the New York Times ‘can. relied on. A census taken early in 28 showed a population of but 8,601; in 1850, o! 107,206; and In 1865, of only 149,179. Since thon it has had @ growth more rapid than any state in the Union. Thus, in 1870 its population was 364,389; the rate of increase from gy 1870, although largely made from 1865 to 1870, was three times the rate of increase or Oregon, ewe. or Wisconsin ; five times that of Califor- Missouri or Illinois, and seven times that lorida or Texas. The census of 1875 put the rolhny ulation of Kansas at 533,; it is Totaneend estimated be a east east 650, 000.
