THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FRIDAY... September 20, 1878. CROSBY 8S. HOYES.,,.Editor. iverage sworm Daily Circulation over en a mane texeer bene Ade regular and permanent circulation than that of ali the other datly payors im the olty added together. ‘Te Travelers and Residents Abroad. THE EVENING STAR will be found on file at the follow! here, rtisemen' Subecriptibas erll be recelved: Henry F Gil Con, $8 ‘Charing Cross, i Sastles _ uw hy ~“‘F° With the notice so plainly and publicly given in advance by Cohen as to what his plans and Purposes are, the District of Columbia would haye a pretty bill of damages to pay in the event that any injury should be done to per- son or property through mob violence. In the face of what has already occurred, neither the local nor national authorities could plead any excuse whatever for allowing even the slight- est breach of the peace on the part of him and his deluded followers. +<ee-—____ A committee of the New York board of aldermen has reported favorably upon the scheme of introducing the Holly System of steam heating into the city. Thus, this new plan for furnishing heat to housesis pushed forward for adoption, and the gas companies continue cheerful and declare dividends, just as if the electric wire was not announced to supersede them both by dispensing light and heat at cheap rates to every household. ———<ce —___ It has been happily suggested that the treas- ury printing press is the ouly press which is free in Turkey. The country is swamped with a depreciated currency, and the bakers refuse to take it for their bread. Some of our ‘Western farmers who are shipping such enor- mous quantities of grain eastward, and who think that a Turkish activity of our treasury presses would be a desirable thing, should take warning by the bakers of Constantinople. It is to be hoped that the time will never come when the workingman of this country, like his brethren in Turkey, will refuse to produce More than he can himself consume because the national medium of exchange Is a worth. less one. — re —___ It is apparent, from an examination of Papers since submitted, that the publication in THE StaRa few days ago to the effect that the proprietor of the Warm Springs had gone into bankruptcy was erroneous, and did in- justice—though, of course, unintentionally,— to that gentleman and place. It is proper to Say that the error grew out of a blunder in a bankruptcy notice sent to this office by the U.S. Marshal of Virginia, and not from any desire here to misrepresent, since THE STAR did not know the person referred to, even by name, and therefore could have entertained no unfriendly feeling toward him. — This correction is cheerfully made, in jus- tice to all concerned, and in spite of the ridic- ulous vaporing of the miserable fellow who Projects himself into the matter under the name of ‘‘Smythe,” and whose mere presence at a respectable watering place is, by the way, far more likely to injure it than anything the newspapers could say about i‘. ——_~<+e-___. Ex-Secretary Kobeson has been ‘‘vindicated,” So far, at least, a3 the action of a Congres- stonal nominating convention can be consid- ered a disinfecting agency. Now if he can only secure his election the jolly ex-tar will re- turn to Washington with such a bill of health from his sailing port as all the quarantine reg- ulations of Congress cannot prevail against. The result of the re recent elections for 205 members of the Canadian house of commons is one of especial interest in this country. Our large and growing trade with the Dominion is directly affected. The liberals who have sus- tained a free trade policy have been defeated, and the government has passed from the hands of MacKenzie, the canny S2ot, into those of Sir John MacDonald, the leaier of the conservatives or opposition. Protection and a retaliatory tariff against the United States are the party cries of the victors. Our trade relations with the Kanucks will thore- fore be totally changed. The conservatives ‘Would show their patriotic regard for England by snubbing her free trade system in order that her manufacturers may contend with those of the United States for the trade of the Dominion on favorable terms. If Cohen’s unfitness had not prevented him from obtaining the position of superintendent of the Hot Springs, for which he made appli- Cation, he would now be a bloated government official, instead of living by the sweat of his brow and other portions of his countenance. The same would have been the case if alike reason had not prevented him from obtaining @ position as copyist. On such trifles does one’s destiny hinge. Me is now known to fame as a workingman an1 machinist, titles won by his brillia :t achievements with a wire brush when for a brief period he cleaned dam- aged models in the Patent Oilice. ————— People will come to believe that the “Ohio idea” is dissection rather than inflation, if the resurrectionists of that state give such frequent evidences of their enterprise. The friends and relatives of a man who dies in Ohio (to select one from many states) have been taught by circumstances that there is to Dea battle with the medical colleges for the body of the deceased, and watchmen are hired to guard the grave. In a recent struggle of this kind near Cleveland the grave-robbers came out ahead and had the unusual misfor- tune to be discovered. The body of a lately buried citizen was found in a medical college to the support of which he had made contri- butions in his lifetime. The dean, faculty, janitor and several students of the college were immediately arrested. This is a more ¥igoreus course than the one usually pursued in such cases. It will throw a damper on the grave robbing propensities of enthusiastic young surgeons, as well as on the business of the professional resurrectionist, as long as the excitement lasts. Public indignation in this country is too spasmodic to stop permanently any business which is found profitable. The general adoption of laws which will furnish a reasonable number of subjects for the prac- tical study of surgery, and, at the same time, enact severe penalties for the acquisition of cadavers in any other way, is what both sur- geons and the public need for their protection. — or It is said to be popularly believed in Europe that at any given moment of a day in the United States either a bank is bursting, ora boiler exploding, or two trains colliding. The great modern invention of statistics enables us to set ourselves right as far as railroad ac- eidents are concerned. It appears that in New York State during the year of 1877 only one out of every 5,216,820 passengers carried was killed, while for the same period in Great Britain one out of every 4,377,727 passengers Yost his life, It thus appears that railroad ac- cidents are either more numerous or more fatal in Great Britain than in New York. rocess bas been invented by which the tes cheap violins can be so improved that itis said to be almost impossible to distin- guish them from excellent Italian instru- ments. As the invention is to be patented there will be no immediate glut in the market ‘of old, rare and brilllantly-toned violins. —____+ee-____—_. English piano manufacturers vempt the col- ored musicians of India and Africa with pianos in which black keys are substituted for white keys, and vice versa. Owing either to the musical tendencies of the Arabians and Africans or to the delicate flattery of this device, the trade in these instruments is said 40 by a large and growing one, ~~ J me EE: EYES. —_— i Rxcosition. hd e120 453 Penna. cp WANTS. ——————————— WANTED-4 irst-class COOK at 1108 F st. aw. saps0 NEW ENGLAND VINEGAR.
