COHEN'S STRIKE PROGRAMME. This morning it was remarked that there were but few laboring men in and about the City Hall, the Columbian panes or other places where they have been in the habit of congregating, and the impression got out that they were laying low fora big demonstration this afternoon. Cohen, wearing a pair of cay- alry boots, was about on the streets as usual, but he had but few men with him. In passing up Louisiana avenue, near 4'4 street, about noon, a gentleman having been introduced to him, remarked: “Well, Mr. Cohen, will you hold a meeting to-night?” Cohen replied: “No, we will hold no more meetings.” The gentlemap—Why? Cohen—‘‘We'll strike ina day or two.” The gentlemen—Well, Mr.Cohen, you've been arrested twice now, (Cohen--Three Uimes), and you ought to go west and lecture like Kearney does.” Cohen—“I'm going. I can make a big thing. But wait ’till after the strike ; we'll have to have that first.” PREPARING FOR THE CAMPAIGN. « As the hour of two o'clock approached the clans assembled about Cohen’s headquarters, No. 423 New Jersey avenue, and by 14s o'clock there were about 100 men present, neat ly all colored. The annual meeting of the Mount Vernon Peace Society came ofi yesterday. The meet- ing, though not very largely attended, was a very enthusiastic one, and was spiced by con- troversy between Dr. Garter, an infidel, of this city, who railed at some length against the Bible, and the good, cool-headed Quakers who believe in that book and in God. ing the extra labor heaped upon the policemen yesterday afternoon and | ja-t night in watching the’ movements of ohen and his cohorts, the pienie given under the auspices of the force at the Schuetzen Park | for the benefit of the yellow fever sufferers was a decided success, upwards of five hundred | tickets being sold, it is thought. In the course of her remarks she said:—“ The last Congress having been strenuousiy urged to do so, appropriated about one million of dollars to be expended in the District of Co- lumbia during the present fiscal year for the relief of the laboring men. This amount ex- pended would not only have given employ- ment to the vast numbers of unemployed laborers in the District, but it would have benefited indirectly the merchant, the lay yer, the doctor; and all other professions would have revived trade, benefited the whoie country, and made everyDody happy. But for some reasons best known to themselves the officials whose duty it is to expend this money, have remained comparatively inert; the laboring men are still unemployed; the beautiful days of autumn are passing away ; the Washington monument still looms up un: finished; the Patent office is still unroofed, although the money has been unexpended, and. the laborers stand ready, tools in hand, to per- form the work.
