The authoiilies hav nearly Falk Corn al completed the repairing of the tree boxes, which has been a very considerable expense, and materially reduced the funds for the plant- ing and care of shade trees. We therefore suggest to our citizens that (a3 a sanitary measure) persons who have trees in front of their residences give the tree boxes a good coat of whitewash. This would add to the -neat appearance of our city and make it more healthful. The expenses to each one would be small, compared with the benefits derived. ee News comes from Nevada that Senator Sharon is going to resign his seat in the Sen ate this fall, republican legislature or not. As Mackay, the miner, is now the richest man in that state, he is naturally an aspirant for the place thus to be made vacani, and will likely get it. —_-2-e-____ Kearney is still harping on the monotonous string “that the newspapers didn’t make him.” In the setse in which this phrase ts used in this case, it isa monstrousand self-evident lie. But for the prominence the newspapers have from time to time given to his blasphemous ravings, Kearney would still be a drayman in San Francisco, instead of a public “lecturer,” taking up collections varying from twenty to sixty dollars per night. The newspapers o° this country have done a great deal of good, and also considerable mischief ; and one of the worst offences for which they are answerable is the “making” of just such miserable dema- gogues, blatherskites, and matignants as this Kearney and his kind, by taking them up in the first instance, and afterward keeping them prominently before the public. Unhappily for the country, these journalistic creations do not allrun their course as rapidly as Kearney. It is not an unusual thing for them to get into Congress, and occasionally one of them slips into ihe Senate, solely on the strength of this kind of an impeius, given by “enterprising” newspapers. There will be dry times for the newspaper boys when Senator Patterson, of Pennsycar- oliva, fivally retires from public life, volunta- sity or otherwise. 22+ ___ The advo. of a sul ute for coal for cooking purposes in summer on the score of economy and comfort, are divided as to wheth- er gas Stoves or a small portable petroleum apparatus should be employed. An Italian savant who has investigated into the tempera. ture of flames, shows that the heat ofa gas flame is 1,20 degrees centigrade and that produced by petroleum is only <") degrees, or if burned in lamps with chimneys, 1,039 de- grees centigrade. It thus appears that the gas fame is hotier, but itis not shown whether or not a e of a given size, effective for cooking purposes, can be produced more cheaply from gas than from petroleum. It is likely that those who eschew coal in summer will use gas if it is already laid inthe house; aud that, otherwise, the petroleum apparatys will be employed. It is only through the report of his violent ¢vath at the bands of the Italian police that We learn even so much as the name of Laz- varetti, the false Christ, who had deceived vhree thousand Italians and was marching ito Arcidosso, clad in robes, at their head. if his injuries are fatal, his intentions and beliefs, the meagre accounts of which come through his enemies, will never be accurately ‘snown; and his name and the fact of his <leath are all that will remain as memorials of this remarkable occurrence of the sober. skeptical nineteenth century. His recovery, on the other hand, would confirm the belief of his disciples in his resurrection, and with the spread of this delusion the doctrines and prac- tices of David the Saint, ashe calls himself, would attract general attention. The whole affair seems to belong, appropriately, to an- wther age. eee It is said that the impending war in South America about Patagonia is due to the fact that the whole length and breadth of that <ountry is now discovered to be rich in gold. As much of the metal is doubtless surface gold, Patagonia is, perhaps, the tramp’s para- lise. He should leave for those hospitable shores at once.
