BAD SMELIS. Acting Commissioner of Pensions Clark has addressed a communicatien to the District Commissioners, calling their attention to the escaping sewer gases into the Shepherd‘build- ing, corner of 12th street and Peunsylvania avenue, during the recent heavy storms, making an intolerable stench. He also com- lains of the backing of sewer water into the Easement of that building. now used as the Pension office, and asks the District au- thorities to adopt the necessary sanitary measures to prevent a recurrence of flooding this place. SANITARY PRECAUTIONS. Health Officer Townshend is exerting all his energies towards having the city put in as perfect a sanitary conditivy as possible with the means at his command, ‘n view of the pos- sibie prevalence of the yellow fever or any other disease, and is having the si hospital put in thorough orger. The excursion to Ocean City last Thursday evening was one of the most pleasant and best ther one of the cheapest of the season, and the Jane Moseley had the honor of passing every boat on the river; and when on her return from Oc City she easily passed the “ Louise,” ti a grand shout from the passengers. The Plate Priuters’ Union excursion, Saturday evening was a suecess financially and oth 2 q 2 was bo accident, only a momentary fright, when a man fell overboard at Fortress Mon- He was soon rescued, and otherwise would not have taken a bath. .... The Sue made another delightful trip to the lower Potomae Saturday night, taking down a num- ber of our citizens, who spent the day yester- day at Point Lookout, bathing, fishing and enjoying the varied recreations for which this landing is famous. The crab fishing from the wharf and decks of the boat aitords a quiet amusement, and about a dozen barrels were caught yesterday by the excursionists. Another amusement yes- terday was some good diving from the end of the wharf and swimming, by half a dozen experts, who kept up these aqueous tumblings several hours. Several fishing par- ties spent the time out in the stream and had fine amusement. A number of families have located ffor the season here in tents. The steamer Louise took down about six hundred excursionisis with the New Jerusalem Lodge of Masons. and the shores were lined wiih bathers during the day. Both boats returned in company last night. The Sue ‘touched at Piney Point on her return,and brought up | several families who have been stopping there for some weeks. Among them was the family of Mr. Fred. W. Jones, of Georgetown heroic act of his little son Freddy, nine years ay last week, was much talked about lad and hislittle brother, four years old, ‘aying on the wharf, when the latter fell were in where the water is several fathoms deep. McCullough has been awarded the con- tract for furnishing the lumber forthe new stables here for the Washington and George. town Street Railroad company. Charles Larew, pastor of the Franklin Metho- dist Church, Newark, ischarged by Mrs. Susan Kirwan, of No. 25 William street, with having, in violation of law, married her daughter, Mamie Kirwan, fifteen years old, to Horace Quimby, another minor, about sixteen years old. She hada beau, a young German, whom her mother favored, but young Quimby “cut him out.” Mrs. Kirwan forbade them keep- 1 company and Mamie promised to obey ex mother. Nevertheless she met Quimby andestinely and there were married in aue ‘orm. They went to their respective homes, ind it was not until a few days ago that Mrs. Kirwan learned the facts.
