He was escorted there by a procession of workingmen, headed by a band. Thomas F. Byron presided. Kearney’s speech was of the usual length and character. defended his profanity by calling it less wicked than the thievery ol Hathaway, Chace, Durant, and Deacon Dunean. He claimed to be a Christian, and said: “Jf bread and water Beecher preached hell away from the next world, we'll give these infamous foe aud lecherous bond thieves a foretaste of it here.” He advised the workingmen to shun Jealousies, pool their issues, and vote only for toiling mechanics; then they will legislate for their own interests, which will necessarily ad- vance those of their fellow laborers. In aa in terview with Gov. Rice, at New York, the gov- ernor said Kearney was ruining the pohtics of Massachusetts, and Gen. Butier’s chances. “If that is said Kearney,” “‘the news- papers and slimy politicians would let me die a@ pavural death. Tieir biter opposition proves that they fear otherwise. Women should go to the polls, peddle ballots, and urge their husbands and sweethearts to vote only the labor ticket. Men should organize, and drill if necessary. Never in the history of labor did the workpeopie zain a point except with the bayonet. Now, if they will, they can do it with the ballot, and must at ali hazards drive the lazy gamblers and pious hypoerites into the country to work for a living.’ He said he should leave Massachusetts soon for Indian- apolis, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago; hen return and scump the state for Butler un th Ul after election.
