Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500—being a much larger bona file, regular and permanent circulation than that of all the other daily papers in the city added togethe: Teo Travelers and Kesidents Abroad. TUE EVENING STAn will be found ou file at the ¥ €o., 449 Strand, Chari g ¢ Hartwick, 118 Boulevard Mage Herald office, 61 Avenue de l'Opera, Paris. Persons leaving the city may have THE STAR Sent to their address by mail, postage prepaid, for SUch period of time as they may desire, at the rate Of 15 cents per week, 60 cents per month, $1.75 for three months, or $8 for six months. BE The money to pay for the time required m vst in: the order, |} announcement that the Knights the Penn: nia mining region d to postpone the general strike, Which had been fixed for an early date in Augu: hows that the prophecy of some such uprising on the bth of this month was not without foundation. For a general strike Would be but the prelude to the violent out breaks, in the shape of riots, for which the Pennsylvania state authorities have been pre- Paring. The postponement from June 15 was caused, it has been reported, by the precau- tionary measures of the state government; and this second reconsideration is ascribed to the improved conditions of many of the labor- ing men, from whom all motives for engaging in a strike have been removed by the action of their employers. Having twice missed the crisis, it looks as if we might get through the Summer without serious trouble, after all. The history of the masked burglary case given in our columns on Saturday furnishes anoth«r proof of the correctness of the posi- tion, always maintained by Tue Star, that the crime of burglary ought to be made a capital offence. The villains engaged ia this bold transaction not only went prepared and intending to kill, if necessary to earry out their purpose or escape capture, but they actually did their very best to put their in- tentions into practice. That they did not kill those engaged in frustrating their attempt to steal was due entirely to want of skill, and not t> want of intent or effort on their part. Clearly, if the community is to have any pro tection against crimina!s their Punishment must be made more certain prompt and severe. —-<<2- To-night the moon will rival the recent pr formances of the sun, and suffer a Partial eclipse. It is to be hoped that the Weather will permit exhibition to be more satisfac- tory than that of the 2th ult. The middle of the eclipse will occur at 7 o'clock and the end at 8:25 o'clock. The beginning will be in- visible, as the sun will not have gone down, and we may consider ourselves fortunate if clouds do not make the same adjective ap- Plicable to the rest of the eclipse. This ob- Scuration of the moon by the earth's shadow may be considered as the revenge of our planet on its satellite for obstructing our sun- light on the 29h of July. ————<+- -__ The most unremunerative official Position of all has been diseoyered. It is not a post- mastership at 312 per annnm, nor the office of general superintendent of the railway mail Service, even though the necessary traveling expenses of the latter, which Congress at tue last session gave him the Privilege of paying, do eat up his salary. Tuis most undesirable position of allis that of charge day tires at the Greek court. In the present relations of the European powers the situation involves Some labor, bat no salary whatever is Pro- vided, and the officer pays his own expanses. It is important that we should be represeated there at present, and it is fort e that Mr. J. M. Read, who fills the positioa, is willing to be a temporary victim to Congressional economy. The Oneida Community is going the way of all Socialistie Societies. The vigor and re- markable influence of John H. Noyes, its founder, have made this community the most Successful experiment of practical com- munism ever attempted in this country. It has lasted about thirty years, and has collected property to the value of more than a million dollars. But age has weakened the powerful will that has held the band so long together, and there are signs of approaching disiateg- ration. Numerous withdrawals have recently taken place, and the younger members of the community have become disaffected with its rules and customs, and sceptical as to the claims of a divine revelation to its founder. The influence of neighboring public sentimeat is also beginning to be felt with greater force, and many members of the comumnity have become disgusted with the immorality which is apart of thissystem. If the Oneida Com- munity fails, it will be a severe blow to the advocates of communism, who will be com- pelled to add another nam- to the long list of unsuccessful socialistic experiments. ——_—__—sse- Whether the heat in which Rarus mad2a mile in 2:13"; was of a character to constitute arecord is of more importance to the backers of the horse and time, respectively, than to the general public. There seem3 to b? n> question that the mile was fairly trotted in tha time mentioned. 50 Rirus has deserved his honors. es In spite of his earnest libors in that diree- tion, the “bounding Banning” has failed to secure a renomination to Congress. It isa wise politician who ean, on o¢-.sion, preserve a “masterly inactivity” .ad leav> himself in the hands of his fricnds. ‘nis is what Say- lerthinks. Banning feels sore now, dat if tke democratic nominve in his stead should fail to be elected it wou'd go far towards soothing his wounded spiri It would either furnish an indication of his own fate in case he had been nominated: or, on the supposi- tion that he would have fired better, he ean Point to the loss of this congressional distrizt as a just punishment to the democracy for falling to duly appreciate him. As Banni majority at last election was only 7: not be unreasonable for him to begin at once to cheer bimeelf with the thoughts suggested. —+20e- A Philadelphian claims to have invented an aurophone, a sort of carbon telephone in mini- ature, which transmits sound from the orifice of the ear to the tympanum, thus enabling a Ot MEAL CRACKERS, GRAHAM CBACKERS, CHARCOAL CRACKERS BREIZELS, And variety of other CRACKERS, JOHN H, MAGRUDER, 1491 New York avenue. augl2-tr_ near U. 8, Treasury Department, SCHLITzZ’s MILWAUKEE LAGER BEB.
