Ucher- A German astronomer of note, Herr Lo- Schmidt, has published his views on that much debated subject, the sun, and the changes in its condi‘ion which may reason- ably be expected. Accepting the general view that the sun is slowly cooling, and that its sur. face will gradually solidify, after the planets haye fallen upon it, he holds in addition that as the solidified exterior of the sun will pre vent the emission of light and heat, the latter will be absorbed from space until the interior of the sun is raised intempera‘ure to a degree almost ineonceivable, or giving Herr Lo- Schmidt's figures, to 25),00),00 degrees canti- grade. This interior will, of course, be gas- ©ous, and when the sun’s crust can no loager resist the pressure, an explosion of some mag- nitude is expected to occur. Such an event would disseminate the matter composing the ‘Sun through space, and another proéess would Degin. This is the gradual cooling down of the bodies thus made, which would result in the formation of new planets and a new solar system. We want a law that will Severely punish the attempt to commit crime whenit is bas clearly shown as in this case. oe —____ Manton ¥ rble’s letter, giving an account Of the organization of the Electoral Commis- sion and the attending events very favorable to Governor Tilden, is regarded by the friends in this city of Thurman and Bayard as design- ed to break them down as Presidential candi- dates. The opinion among some shrewd poli- ticians is that the document was manipulated by Mr. Tilden himself, who is uneasy at the growing strength of Judge Thurman, andem- ployed Marble’s pen with the hope of killing hum off. In fact, this opinion seems to be en- tertained as well by republicans as by demo- correspondent of the Nution, at paper endorses as “a German writer of very high authority,” alleges that “a great many Smyrna earpets which are sold at Present ut Stewart's and Sloane's, in New Nork,have never seen the East, but are di- rectly imported from Sehmiedeberg,”—a car- pet manufacturing town of considerable im- Portance in Germany. This isa very serious accusation, and one that ought to be prempily met by the two houses named, as well as on account of their own reputation as for the in- formation and satisfaction of the large num- ber of people in the United States who have been patronizing them for many years in the belief that every article bought there was ex- actly what it was represented to be. ——<re __ This isthe day on which, according to the Invitations, the silver conference will begin its sessions. There has been so much contra- dictory speculation as to the results of the Meeting that its assembling, discussions and decisions are awaited with interest. Russia is threatened with the same annoy- ances in taking possession of Batoum that Aus- tria is now experiencing ia occupying Bosaia. ‘These detached bits of Turkey show remarka- ble vitality. Butthe Bosnians, as wellas the population of Batoum, lick the power, though not the will, toresist effectively. There seems to be too much truth this year in the usual report that “the peach c-op is a failure.” The blame is laid on the cold weather in May. The doleful news that the crop this Season will be only one-eighth of last year’s yield, which was itself “a failure,” being only half the average, is not, peshaps, entitled to an unquestioning belief.
