If a letter is not worth signing it is not worth writing. It is certainly not worth printing. <e—____ The debate in the English House of Com Mons on the general subject of the treaty of Berlin is decidedly vigorous and interesting. Mr. Gladstone, in his speech yesterday, denied | the charge of unjusti @ and reckless at- tacks on Lord Beaconsfield, and denounced the Anglo-Turkish convention as a startling novelty, which set the law of Europe at naught, Was unjust to other powers, ove the Tights of parliament. and laid new burdens on the people. Lord Beaconsfield in reply to Mr. Gladstone’s denial and as an excuse for the yenomous sentence of dennneiation, which he lately applied to his political rival, points out that Mr. Gladstone has charged him with degrading and debasing the great name of land. with selling the Greeks, and with being guilty of an unsurpassed act of duplicity. A word battle between such masters of sar- casm as Beaconsfield and Gladstone is suf- ficient to attract general attention to the debate, even if important English interests and the attitudes of great parties were not involved. There is little doubt that Beacons- field will be upheld for the present. The Struggle now will merely have the e‘fect of increasing or reducing the government's ma- jority. But it will show in what direetion the tide of public opinion is turning, and will in- dicate to the opposition whether it may rea- sonably hope for ultimate success by making a persistent fight on this issue. Citizen Schwab, who favors the New York Socialists with frothy oratory, free, and with foaming beer for a consideration, hai been cruelly snubbed. At the meeting of the con- vention of socialists in that city last night a long series of resolutions, providing for the appointment of a committee to appear before the Congressional committee on the investiga- tion of the state of labor, was adopted. In Spite of the fact that Citizen Schwab presented the resolutions, he failed to obtain a place on the committee. The flourishing beer-vender, Dotwithstanding his declaration that be was as good a communist as any man present, was thought to be too much of a capitalist to repre- Sent the horny-handed who labor by the week. It is sugsested to Citizen Schwab to make a bid for popular favor by reducing the price of his beer to three cents a glass. Probibition, the resumption of specie pay- ments and the rebel war claims took so much Space in the platform adopted yesterday by the Maine republicans that an expression of opinion on the policy of the administration was unavoidably crowded out. Blaine stock is still above par in Maine. ee _____ The spread of the yellow fever in New Orleans is bringing upon the city the inconve- nience of isolation. The safety of giving ves- sels from that port clear bills of health is doubted, and mails which have ordinarily passed through the city will be diverted. As Germany surpas: all other nations in the percentage of her population, troubled with defective eyesight, it is natural that great attention should be given by Germans to the sliseovery of causes an 1 remedies of tha evil and to discussions pertaining in any way to the eye. Many curious points in relation to sight have been brought to notice by the re. searches of German oculists. The latest con- troversy among those interested in such sub- jects ison the question whether the eye in the human race has always possessed the same Celicacy as at present and an equal power of distinguishingcolors. It is claimed that primi- tive man had only a confused notion of tints, The ancients saw only three colors in the prism, and the sages of the North speak of only three in the raindow. These are, it is Supposed, the intense colors, red, orange and yellow. It is asserted that in all the records of antiquity only the first and last of these three are specifically mentioned. One Savant Says he can prove that blue which is taken as atype of the feebler colors, is not designated in any way in the poems of the Rig Veda or the Avesta, the Bible, the verses of Homer, the Koran, or the ancient literature of Fin- land or Seandinavia. But according to the re- ceived translation, blue is mentioned any number of times in the Bible. There is alsoa strong party who believe that the eyes of the world have not increased in delicacy, and be- tween the arguments of both sides, many interesting facts are developed econceruiag eye-sight in all ages of the world The judge in the > ork baby-wigon case has, after mature consiferation. deci lsd in favor of the baby. hing infants in fam- i {$,can e aseque ed across the floor in baby wagons, testy individuals beneath to the contrary not- withstanding.
