YUU WILL SAVE MONEY. o he facts are briefly these: Mr. Philp, who Was a clerk in the pay director's office in San Francisco, brough blank drafts on the sub- treasury to that officer for payment of certain claims against the government, which the pay director signed. It was Mr. Philp's duty to transmit these drafts to the persons for whom they were intended. After the pay director cam2 to Washington, vouchers for some of these claims could not be found. He, there- upon, pressed Mr. Philp, who had arrived here, for an explanation, and he confessed that he had drawn the money himself and failed to hand it over to the persons entitled toit. The claims unpaid were those of the California Cracker company, $720; Whitten, Fuller & Co., $61.72, and J. E. Gordon, $203.47: so that the night named, was fatally shot by some one unknown, whether by accident or design has not transpired. She lingered during the night and died Friday morning. The house in which she resided stands in an isolated position on the outskirts of a dense forest, and it was from behind one of these trees that the fatal shot was fired. The county authorities were at once notified, but have notas yet succeeded in capturing the guilty party. The affair caused considerable excitement in the local- | ity, where Mrs. Richardson was well known and highly respected.
