In the preliminary heats yesterday in the Thames regatta the American crews won the leading honors, and in the coneluding con- t sts to-day the Columbia crew repeats its vie- tory, while the Sho wae-cae-mette crew, which achieved such an easy triumph yesterday, seems to have failed to-day only through the illness of one of the men. As this crew was made up partially of French Canadians, their Vietory, if achieved, would uot have been as distinetly American as is that of the Columbia boys. We should not wonder if the Britons, in accounting for their defeat by the Colum bians, (whose style they criti vious to the race as altogeiher defective.) should put forward the excuse that the datter had the best beat. The Columbia erew took out two boats, a cedar sheil 41 feet by inches Hfeet by 13 inches. per She ‘The la t acted a good deal of attention on the Thi as a noveliy ia naval arehi- teet rf n which of these boats the Colum e race. Finally, some Cainese Edison made the »py diseovery that roast pig could be achieved without buruiag a whole house in cooking it. Now, it is possible that sone mde of cele- brating the glorious natal day of Ameriein independence will be invented by which proper patriotism can be exhibited wi hout burning houses ; but the diseovery his not yet reached Washington. Two or three buildings were burned yesterday here, which is perhaps moderate, in view of the rain of fire and brim- Stone, firecrackers, rockets, and explosives of all sorts that fetl upon the city for hours. Prob- ably the fact that there was little air in eircu- lation, prevented a more serious conflagra- tion. Itis easy tosee that witha high wind jQ Operation at the time, that “independence day” fires occur in various paris of the city, the firemen exhausted by their work would be unable to keep down the flames: and we are constantly liable to a terrible experience like that of Portland, Maine. That city, in view of its lesson, has abvlished pyrotechnic pa- triotism as altogether too expensive a luxury to be indulged in. So has New York, and $9 has Baltimore; and most of the American cities are moving in the same direction. However, in case of war with that country, doubtless Texas would take the contract of supplying a volun- deer inyading force of considerable propor- fous. It appears from inyestigation made by the ‘N. Y. World that the “tenement house” system prevails in that city toan extent even more alarming than had been supposed. It is stated that nearly three-quarters of the citizens live Jn tenement houses, which number 21,000 out ‘of the 78,000 buildings in the city. New York is beginning to rival some of the European continental cities In the extent to which this style of building is employed, but by no means in regard to comfort and decency of life in them.
