THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FRIDAY. June 28, 1878. CROSBY 58. NOYES..,.Editor. city added togeher. ———- +e —___ ‘The Star for the Summer. Persons leaving the city may have THE STAR Sent to their address by mail, postage prepaid, for Such period of time as they may desire, at the rate of 15 cents per week, 60 cents per month, §1.75 for three months, or $3 for six months, 4#@ The money to pay for the time required must in all cases accompany the order, Otherwise the Paper cannot be sent. —_— ‘rican Inventors and English ‘Alverie Appropriators ne The war between the true and the alleged inventor of the telephone-microphone-thermo- phile has begun in earnest. Edison has re- plied tothe card of Messrs. Preece and Hughes on the subject, pointing out numerous mis- ‘statements and contradictions into which the Englishmen have permitted themselves to fall, and has placed some points of the controversy beyond dispute. Preece in his card denies that Hughes has brought out any thermopile, and is endorsed in this statement by Hughes himself. Edison quotes from the Haginzer of May 17, 1878, to show that the discovery of the heat nteasuring properties of carbon was ascribed to Hughes as the result of experi- ments made at the time by him and that the | term thermophile was actually employed in connection with the alleged invention. Preece is connected with the matter by the fact that he had received from Edison the Stak of April 1th, in which E.lison’s discovery of the heat- measuring properties of carbon was an- nounced, as is proved by quotations made by Preece from the same paper, ina lecture be- fore the Society of Arts. E:tison’s title to this discovery is therefore placed beyond question, both by the convineing evidence in- troduced by him, and by the disclaimer of Hughes. The next point at issye is in regard to the discovery of the sound mig- property of carbon under certain con- Preece, in his eard, says: (Hughes’) microphone is quite a different in- Strument to Edison’stelephone.” In a letter to Edison, dated May 23, he says: “ Hughes’ doings border very closely upon yours, and it is difficult to distinguish between what you have done and what he has done The latter opinion is nearer the truth. It is not only dif- ficult, but impossible, to distinguish between the doings of the two. By quotations from Scientific papers it is shown conclusively that the discovery that carbon properly prepared changes its resistance with pressure, Haghes’ great discovery was made long before by Edi- son, and that tLe disearding of the vibrating diaphragm a “distinctive” feature of the mi- crophone, was also first thought of and suc cessfully attempted by Edison. An extract from a letter written on June 7 by Sir William Thompson, who certainly cannot be charged with a prejudice in favor of Edison, ought to ‘Set the matter at rest. He sa: “It is certain that the meeting of the Brit- ish Associaiion at Plymou:h last S-ptember,a | method of magnifying sound in an electric telephone was described as having been in. vented by Ecison, which was identical ia prin ciple and in some deiails with that browzht | Sorward by Hug! The qv ‘stion of the originality of some of the detaiis of the so-called invention of Hughes is all that remains to be settled. And this isa matter of little consequence, where the con- troversy has been concerning the discovery of | important scientific faets, and the invention of the essential parts of instruments by whieh they may be practically utilized. Edison's vietory is, to all appearances, complete. —— —- 2-2 -—_____ The weather was hot yesterday, not only all over the United States, but in England. It was hotter in London Wednesday and yester- day than ever known in June. It is wrong to make disparaging remarks about the Potter committee. They no longer disturb the country to any appreciable extent, and what, with the heat and lack of suce: they are already sufficiently punished for what they have done in that direction. Now what could be more aggravating than an episode of yesterday's examination? A witness belong ing te a telegraph company is subp:enaed to produce important telegraphie dispatches passing between the Jenks, Pitkins and An- derson. He appears with the dispatches, but Says that they are of a privileged character, and that he cannot produce them except under compulsion. The investigators are as excited as the heat will permit. They sternly compel the witness and order the dispatches to be produced. With dramatic reluctance he de- livers up the results of his researches in the form of a single dispatch, addressed to Ander- son in Philadelphia: “ Are you coming over to-morrow? Answer.—A, D. Jenks.’ If the investigators did not tear their hair it was because they were bald, or exhausted by their tussles with previous witnesses. ————-<-e-—___ The Russian government having as prelim. inary measures abolished the jury trial in eases of attempted murder with political mo- tives, caused the retirement of the judge who gave Vera Sassulitch’s ease to a jury, rear- rested Vera and quashed the trial by which she was acquitted, is now ready to mete out Russian justice to the prisoner. The govern. ment will have its own way at home if it can not abroad. The Czar was made so nervous by the shooting of Trepotf that it is likely to fare hard with Vera Sassulitch. “Louisiana politics” is a name of derision just now. but really the bad repute of the state in this connection dates back a good deal fur- ther than the last Presidential election. The “Plaquemines frauds” by which Louisiana Was carned against Henry Clay in 18H prob. abiy surpassed anything in the way of polit ical rascality ever achieved in the country. ——-e-e-- In the procession escorting the delegates to the Hlinois republican state convention a por. trait of Grant was carried, accompanied by the mottoes, “Give us Grant in 188)” and “Two good terms deserve another.” Tuais seems to indicate that Grant and not Wash- burne is the favorite son of Illinois. y York police commissioners have issued a seasonable order prohibiting the use of fireworks and all the class of explosiv dangerous to life and property, on the Foarth of July. A similar promulgation by our police | commissioners would be a judicious thing. ‘The clan Cameron s‘ill holds supremacy in | Pennsylvania. Governor Hartranft concludes | that it will not be worth while to buck against | Don Cameron forthe U. S. Senate, and has retired from the contest. By the Curre-Julien method, meat is taken to Europe in good condition from Australia and the Argentine Republic. Former attempts at such transportation und +r different meth- ods have been unsuceessful, though meat may be carried in refrigerating chambers from North America to Europe. By the new method the meat is frozen to the very center and car ried elosely packed on its voyage at a very low temperature, obtained by the use of am monia. This plan, from the intensity of cold it produces, the compactness of stowage, and consequent large cargoes which it renders pos- sible, and its greater cheapness, is likely to supplant all others, and a large trade will probably result from its use. Mutton is now taken from the Argentine Republic to London and sold readily at a profit of nine cents cn the pound. A statement that General Butler is to go home in about two weeks, “to look after his political interests,” has set some of the north- ern papers to discussing what his political in- terests are, in view of his recent performances in Congress and in the Potter committee. It may be safely asserted that they are the inter- ests of Bey Qutler—frst, last, and all the time. The gradual collapse of the Potter investiga- tion gives promise of a more mammoth cave than the one in Kentucky, or its newly discoy- éred rival in Wyoming territory, “His | A) UCTION * READY MADE S' all of our own manufacture.
