Italy is indebted to England’s patented machinery for her lazzaroni, and America for her tramps to American inventions. Patent laws have been making paupers in England faster than any other cause, and railroads, telegraphs and other modern innovations have revolutionized and demordlized society in this country. The canals and stage lines w! formerly gave | employment to many thousands are crowd- 3 5 cut to give’ place to the rail- road monopolies which swell tue coffers | of v stockholders. Good times can never be realized again while railroads, telegraphs, telephones and patent laws are tolerated and protected. These have contributed more to the impoverishment of the country than all | other causes combined. Telegraphs are a posi- tive injury to business. The patent laws of this country ought to be burned and inven- tions destroyed. Type setting is about the only pursuit not yet materially affected by in- ventions, and it’ will not be long before that will be ruined, for already has inventive ‘enius turned its infernal course in this diree- ion, and we shall soon have type-setting ma- chines to do all the work now requiring so many intelligent men. Theland is now almost altoxether cultivated by machinery, and the result is that tramps infest almost the entire country. In China this thing is much better under- stood and treated than anywhere. The Em- pire of China has kept up its revenues and in- dustrial pursuits bya system of hand labor, and by resisting the ittroduction of labor: saving machines. The sooner steps are taken to counteract the power and influence of labor-saving machines, railroads and other feariul monopolies, the sooner wiil good pape frangullity and happiness, prevailover the land.
