He has been adopted into the tribe and has a squaw wife, but is under surveillance to prevent escape.—[ Bos- ton Journal. WHAT 18 THE MATTER WITH STANLE A most miserable episode occurred at the newspaper press fund dinner on Saturday night. Lord Dunraven, in a speech fuil of genial humor, gaye the toast of foreign and Atrerican pupsins, con ed with the name of Mr. H. M. Stanley, and the toast was re- ceived with great cordiality. Mr, Stanley, in his reply, appeared scliberately to set himself task of effacing this cordiality. From be- ing sardonic. his yemarks, which wandered over a bewilderingly wide field, became offen- sive, and there arose the strange sound of en- ergetic hissing. Quiet was temporarily re- stored at the energetic instance of a well- known English journalist, who sprang to his feetand shouted, “Shame!” But Mr. Stan- ley could not take a hint so marked, and with inexplicable obstinacy pursued a’ course of irrelevant offensiveness. The storm of hissing broke forth again uncontroliably and was not to be stayed until Mr. Stanley sat down, leay- ing his observations unconcluded. Can no friend to a good but strangely warped fellow Suggest to Ins immediate attention another unexplored desert?—[London World, May 22 A Two-racep BaBy.—The Cincinnati Ga- zetle prints a letter from Glynnwood, Ohio, dated May 25, which says: “Our usual quiet village and surrounding community were all excitement to-day over one of the greatest of curiosities—a double babe. We called at the office of Dr. Noble to find out the truth of ii, and he told the following: Last hight he was called to see the wife of Mr. Green Bailey, a farmer living near here, who gave birth'to one of the greatest curiosities I have heard of. The child is a common-sized one, well-formed in its lower limbs and body up to Its shoulders. It had two sets of arms, all well formed, ex- cept that one pair was back of the other, and worked backward. ‘It had but one head, but the head had two faces on it, one on each side; both faces were well formed in all the organs. It breathes from both sides, which the Doctor says indicates the existence of two pairs of lungs. Mr. Baer is gate jubilant over it, and says it will be a fortune to him. Both mother and child are doing well.” A WIFE TRIES TO Porson Her HUSBAND. The Worcester (Md.) Shield is informed that one day it week a white woman went to the office of Dr, Hammond, in Berlin, Worcest county, and asked him to give her a dose of poison for her dog. The doctor didso, and the woman then took the poison home and told her husband that there was a dose of powdgrs the doctor said he must take. He too , and at last accounts was very ill.
