AN INTERESTING APPEAL CaSE.—Yesterday afternoon in the Supreme Court of the District the case of George Robinson, indicted for an assault with intent to kill, and convicted at the jast term of the Criminal Court of assault and battery only, was heard. In the court below the counsel for the defense urged that such a verdict on such an indictment was equivalent toa verdict of acquittal, and moved to dis- charge the aceused. The court overruled this motion. Aiterwards the same question was raised on habeas corpus, and the case was ap- pealed. Mr. Bradley contended that the fol lowing section of the code of the Distriet took away from all courts, except the Police Court. all original jurisdiction to act in eases of simple assault and battery: “The Police Court shall haye original and exclusive jurisdiction of all offenses against the United Stites committed in the District not deemed eapital or other in- famous erimes—that is to say, of all simple as- saults and batteries, and all other misdemean. ors not punishable 4 imprisonment in the penitentiary.” Gov. Wells urged that the true meaning of this provision is that the Police Court shall have exclusive original jurisdic- tion in eases where the offense charged is only a misdemeanor. __ Chief Justice Cartter, announcing the unan- imous opinion of the court, said that there could be no doubt that the law conferred upon the Criminal Court of the District power to re- cord verdicts for assault on indictments for as- sault with intent to kill, verdicts for petit lar- ceny on indictments for grand larceny, &c., and dismissed the appeal. The return race of the Analostan Boat Club, of this city, with the Undines, of Baltimore, was rowed on the Patapseco river, south Balti- more, yesterday afternoon. Last year, on the Potomac, the “An: ans beat the Undine. vester on the apseo, the Undines de- feated the Analostans. Every point along shore from which a view of the race could be obtained was packed with human beings, while all the steamers on the river for the purpose of accommodating those who wished to witness the race were heavily loaded. Small-»oats of every description crowded the river. Great interest in the result of the race was felt both here and in Baltimore. A large number of Washingtonians went over to witness the con- test. The course, one mile and a half and re- turn, lay directly across the Patapsco from the the Baltimore side to the Anne Arnndel shore. ‘The Anal oss for position, and took the o one furthest from the shore. Both crews appeared to be in excellent trim, the Analostans seeming the heaviest. The Undines looked fresher than the Analos- tans, who appeared to be_ either over-irained or improperly trained. The erews took up ion at the starting flag, amid cheers. At 6:14 the word “go” was given, The Analostans shot ahead, pulling beautifully about strokes to the minute... They soon got a lead of the Undine of two boat lengths or more. Be- fore the turning point was reached they had considerably widened the gap between the de, or the two boats, “They lost their vantage, however, by wild and crooked steering, the bow run: ning the boat out of the course. Both crews rounded the flags on the return home about even. The bow of the Undine crew now did more wiid steering, but his crew nevertheless drew weilahead. The Analostans, who ap- peared to flag, were aroused by a Washington cheer. They spurted and went ahead. “The Undines now took a turn at spurting. They were off their course but kept straight on. At the commencement of the last half mile of the race the stroke gaye them 40 a minute, and again they took the lead. The Analostans tried to rally, but with the exception of the stroke were unable to pull vigorously. The Undines kept on steadily and passed the stake boat four lengths ahead of the Analostans. \o official time was kept. ‘The Analostans time was S414 and the Undines were not orded. There was great cheering at the finish. The Undine crew was, with one excep: tion, the same as that which was beaten by the Analostans on the Potomac last year. With the exception of the stroke the Analos: ton crew were new men. The following we.e the crew Analostan—K. Whi! Q. Campden, No. 2, 153 pounds IL. C.
