THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTO WEDNESDAY.....,......May 15, 1873. CROSBY 8S. NOYES.... Editor. Average sworn Daily Circulation over 17,500—being a much larger bona fide, reoular and permanent circulation than that of all the other daily pavers in the city added They Did Not Advertise. . It is stated in the Baltimore papers that the Bremen line of steamers running from that port have decided to substitute freight steam ers with steerage accommodations for their steamships having saloon accommodations. The latter they have transferred to New York and New Orleans for the reason. as stated by the Suh, that the summer exodus to Europe will give them at those ports a much greater number of first and second-elass passengers than they have found, from experience, they would get if they continued to make Balti- more their point of departure. To show how little these steamships have been appreciate 1 by persons bound to Europe it is stated that the America. one of the finest vessels afloat, which left Baltimore on the 2d of Miy, took only 29 passengers, at atime when, owing to the Paris exhibition, the transatlantic steam- | ships from New York are crowded to excess. Surprise isexpressed that people south andwest of Baltimore going to Europe should overlook this line of fine steamships and take passage | from New York in the more crowded steamers sailing from that port. This isa temporary triumph for the reput cans, but it is doubtful if they will gain much with the country by placing themselves in the apparent attitude of resisting investigation. They can by shrewd filibustering tactics delay the passage of the inves igution resolu- tion for son, but they mus: suecumb in end, and doubtless they would gain a point with the go al tent hen they right to rum a count resort to all the parliamenta able to resist democratic ean hardly compl: sition when they propose to ruz investigation public ¢ their opponents to fe to their heari’s eon- yelaim the Speake Asthe leader of the House democratic m ty in the past, he resorted to filibuster taeties to hold the republicans in cheek a skill that bothered the majority a good dea Now when irate demoerats rise and demand in thunder tones why he doesn’t put an end to the fillibustering of the republicans and com- pei them to vote, he remarks pensively, with a smile on his lips and a tear in his eye, that upon his word he doesn’t know how ihe thing ean be done. Though the Potter resolution is professediy innevent of any aim to unseat President Hayes, it is intimated that a clause in it is de- signed to afford an opening for the admission of testimony to that end. The language is (after enumerating certain things to be in- quired into) “and into all the facts whieh, in the judgment of said committee, are eon- nected with or pertinent therete that is to tne Louisiana and Florida elee- tions. It is asserted that the project is to introduce the testimony of some of the con- fessed perjurers in Florida, to the effect that they were induced to falsify the returns of that state by promises made by ex-Governor Noyes that if Mr. Hayes was inaugurated they should be appointed to office; whereupon, under the authority given in the clause quoted, the committee will proceed to inquire whether these alleged agreemeuts were car- ried out, with a view to laying a foundation for the impeachment o! the President, This scheme will pretty certainly fall through, both by the failure to connect Hayes with any frauds, aid the indtsposition of the country to stand the nonsense of an Impeachment pother Randall knows how it is himself. ori President Hayes is said to show the tran- quil:ty of innocence in view of the investiga- tien in ‘eged election frauds. oe The establis! ment of a steamship line be- tween Hong Kong and Callao by an American firm, oceurring so soon after the refusal of citizenship to the Chinese by our courts, arouses the suspicion that an organized plan is on foot to convince John Chinama that his destiny drives h m southward, and hat it will | be to his interest to seek in South America “ fresh fields and pastures new. +222 —___ It appears that a native Chinam in, who has gone as a Christian missionary aning hs countrymen in Oregon, is compl ed to carry a pistol in one hand to defend his life while offering the Bible with the other The Chi- nese make no distiiction between Chris iaus and Americans. ‘The venerable B tendered his resignation of the diocese under his charge, owing to inereasing physical in- firmities, has withirawa it for the present pending an examination of the grave ch .rges which have been published against him, and for the same reason has abandoned his in tended trip to Europe.
