Death of Professor Henry. The great scientist of America is dead! He not only held that high rank in the scientific world, but in private life he was known as the purest, kindest and noblest of men. Those associated with him intimately tell of the con- tinuous examples of his benevolence, magna- nimity and high sense of honor. Sympathetic and charitable, noappeal for aid by the friend- less and destitute was denied. With all the means of acquiring wealth open to one of his scientific abilities and powers of invention, he died a poor man. He was one of the few men who es tuting his scientific knowledge for money. He is known to have received hundreds of propo ions by which, for the use of his name in the endorsement of mining projects and other projects, he could have made himself wealthy ; but they uniformly met with prompt and = indignant rejection even where the schemes had a_ sufficient degree of merit to make them fair business operations. | But be had no taste or inclination for any other pursuit than the higher walk of pure science, and he did not even pause to ut pecuniarily any of his own great inventio for instance, the magnetic telegraph- “As is | well estabtished he made experiments and pointed out the applicability of the tacts de- | monstrated by these experiments to the instantaneous omveyanee of i between distant points by means of & Magnetic telegraph, several years before such a telegraph was drought | into practical operation by Prof. Morse. And this is but one of the discoveries that he announced for the good of mankind and al- lowed others to put into practical use for their own agg andizement. It will be difficult to | ssor for Prof. Henry having his | find a su broad scientific knowledge. Among those mentioned most pro: Prof. Baird, the assistant secretary: Prof. Hilgard, of the Coast Survey; and Prof. Tay- lor, who has had charge of the scientific cor- respondence of the Smithsonian Institution of late. ———_+«-e-_____. The Emperor William. The third would-be assassin of Kaiser Wil elm, who fired several shots at him on Satur. day. was as unsuecessful as his predecessors. Pistol bullets do not seem to be able to touch Wilhelm as Emperor any better than when, as | in the former attempts on his life, he was merely King of Prussia, or the heir apparent. Hoedei, the man who attempted the assassina tion, is, according to his own statement after arrest, an anarchist, the enemy of all political parties, of the present condition of society an! of public institutions. He denies that he in- tended to shoot the Emperor, and asserts that his purpose was to kill him Kaiser Wilhelm at this juncture woull be a great disaster. as still further unsettling 0 present unsettled condition of ropean af fairs. Much also remains to be done in the way of assuring permanence? to the union of the German states. and the work of consolida tion carried on by him with such success should not be so rudely interrupted. His ae sassination by the hand of a political fanatic would arouse bitter feelings and cause dis. sensions, and make the task of assuring a firm and united Germiny most dificult. The Emperor is said to have displayed great coolness under fire. His 81 years of life do not seem to have weakened his nerves. It may now be safely predicted hat his long and eventful career will be brought to a peaceful and natural close. He has gone through many experiences in his time. As a young man he accompanied the armies which overthrew the great Napoleon. He became King of Prussia in 1861, reorganized the army, appointed Bis- marck as his minister, and zed successful wars with Austria in 1863 and France in 1870 and 1471. On January 18 of the latter year he was proclaimed Emperor of His great aim has been the unification of the Ger- man states, and his efforts in that direction have been, so far, successful. When he dies the crown prince, Frederick William Nicholas Charles, who married Victoria Adelaide, princess royal of Great Britain, and who served with distinction as commander in the German wars with Austria and France, will take up the task where his father leaves it. ————~+e —____ The current cold snap developed a positive frost last night, and ice was found at several points in the vicinity of Washington. The frost so far does not seem to have injured the vegetation, but the temperature to-day con- tinues so low that it is feared that it may be yeteolder to-night, and that damage may be done to tender vegetables,—beans, tomatoes, and the like. The youth of to-day will begin to lose confi- dence in the asserted dangers of whale fish- ing, if the degenerate specimen recently killed in Raritan bay is to be taken as a representa- tive fish. Though thirty five feet long, he was attacked by three men ina small boat, armed only with a knife,an axe anda seythe, was driven into shoal water and ignominiously slain bY HAVING NO USE FOR AHAN?- | L.
