Review of the Russian Troops after the Peace. The Grand Duke Nicho appeared on the Rou at five o'clock. There were assembled wenty-nine battalions of infantry, forty-four guns, and eight squadrons of cavalry, drawn up in five parallel lines, with a space of fifty yards between one line and the next. Some two hundred bi rds in advance of the front line stood an oblong table bearing a picture of Our Lord gorgeously decorated in silver, a Rible bound in gold, and several books with porerests of sain’ Upon a round table be- hind the Arner one stood a silver basin of = water and a brush of the same precious metal. To conduct the religious portion of the cere- mony a number of Russian priests were in at- tendance, headed by one who was habited ina short robe of golden texture, strewh with red crosses, over a purple si under-garment, and his hat was of purple velyet.. The sky was overeast, but nothing could chill the enthu- siasm of the troops, who cheered as the Grand Duke and his statl rode in and out between thelr lines, cheered as the distinguished party moved forward to take their appointed plac and continued to make the air ring with thei acclamations whenever an excuse was found for a cheer. Before the functions of the priest were em- ployed, the ofticers had gathered around their commander to hear his congratulations. His Imperial Highness looked supremely happy, as, in a loud voice, he announced that peace was concluded. He thanked the army especially the Guards whom he had_ so commanded, for the played: and finished by waving it in the air, and example was conta; was no thought o} itary discipline, and a rare scene of enthusiasm was witnessed. The men in the ranks kissed and hu; one another; they cried, t up their caps, and gave themselves up to a ‘ complete abandon of joy, in which some poor Turks who had been standing among the spec- tators joined, using heir turbans in the absence of a more soldierly head-dress. The tumult of this indescribable gladness was only subdued when the Grand Duke was seen ad- vancing to the improvised altar. There, kneeling before a gold cross which the priest extended to him, his Imperial highness Kissed the sacred symbol; then rising he took the brush, dipped it in the water, and made the sign of the cross upon his forehead. After Kissing the hands of the head priest he made y for his son, who did as his father had done. General Ignatieff, whose blue spectacles made him very conspicuous, was the next to take the water of sanctification: and scarcely less noticeable was the late Ambassador's wife, dressed in mauve silk,a jacket trimmed with a dark fur, anda black velvet bonnet with two saftron-colored feathers.—{ London Standard’s San Stefano Correspondence, March 3. 'y shouted, they flung THE ROBBERY OF A GRAVE DECLARED TO BE 4 LARCENY.—The court of appeals in St Louis has affirmed the decision of the criminal court in the case of the State vs. Ernest Doepke, the body-snatcher. Doepke was sen- tenced to two years in the penitentiary for stealing from a grave a coffin containing the dead body of Conrad Doll, the coffin being of the value of more than $10 and the property of Louis C. Merkel, son-in-law of the deceased. When arrested the defendant had the corpse and coffin in a wagon and stated that he had taken the body for dissecting purposes. The defence set up was that a second-hand coffin was of no value. and the corpse was worthless except for the scientific purpose of dissection. This plea did not hoid in the trial court, and the court of sppeals decided that the coffin had a value, although it was not saleable in the market. The desecration of a grave is made a misdemeanor under the statute. Doepke's attorney claimed that this penalty superseded the common law, which makes the stealing of any article of value a larceny.
