(From the Boston Post.) The German bullfinch is said to be the most bewitching little pet in the world, and more human, almost, than one imagines that a bird could be!—as may be inferred from the fol lowing fascinating traits which are now de ighting the owner of one of them in this city He is a stylish little fellow, with gray plumage, a red breast, black tips to his wings, anda black cap on his head, and he was brought up and trained by a white-haired old German. The young lady's father has white hair, and the bird is fonder of him than of any one. When he is pleased or when any of his favorites come hear him, he manifests it_ by pulling up all his feathers until he | S like a tleet ball, but when he is angry shakes himself scolds ina funny little “squawk" that is infinitely diverting. He is very fond of his young misiress, but less so than he is of his master, and he has one trick, that of making a bow and giving the little squawk for “ good morning,” that he will only do for him. “The young jady’s mother is an invalid, and spends much of her time humoring the whims of aster Bullfinch, whom she adores. The bird rv admiration and devocion as the lord ly sen is very apt to do—in apparent inditfer ence and bod uperciliousness; but since when the lady is away he misses his slay t shows how bored he is by scolding ail th time, this fact of her being so indispensable him consoles her for the ung little tyrant. as it does so man for that of their greater ones. and makes he: keep on spoiling him. Bullfinches do not sin; y whistle; and this one, of course, as an accomplished bul finch should) whistle very prettily the tu that he was trained into. “ Bat sometimes ae the key, and then his disgus: isimmense. He squawks shal self vigorously. aud finally begins aya owly to practice: the Wayward pass. nd over again until he h; e siaris oll glibly from t whistles it clear through withou nit. The youthful mistress of this charming bird, who is a remarkably handsome and engaging brunette, has a young lady friend who often calls into spend an hour or two with her. From the moment the bullfinch first saw this maiden he took a violent fancy to her, and showed his preference for her over everybody white-haired master in the t un mistakable manner. He will not whistle when she is in the room, but looks at her fixedly, keeping himself ruffied into a ball all the time, When other people feed him with seeds he runs to the wires impatiently. snatches the seed, and snaps atthe person, but when sh ofters him one he advances as quietly as pos- sible and takes it gently off her finger, his irritability quite subdued. He manifests the same satisfac ion every time she comes to the house, and the only explanation the family can give o y age over Kol it rigut, when he beginning and eof it is that his original white-haired her must have had a daughter with yellow hair like that of the young lady, and that in specially singling her out, along With his mas ter. for his favorites, he is in reality remain- ing faithful to his earliest associations, Why Leo XIII. Was Elected. THE CHOICE MADE BY THE CARDINALS MONTHS AGO. A special cable dispatch to the New York Star from Rome, February 22, says: “S important facts, not_kne kept sacred relative to the election of Cardinal Pecci as the successor of Pius IX., have come to the knowledge of your correspondent in Rome. His election, ia fact, was a 101 me conclusion, and this was known to the late Pope some time ago, as well as to the Carding I X. beiDe Subject to fits of illness, and i énce of his advanced age, not know ing but he might die any , he was anxious to protect the Church from any possible con- flict with any of the governments of Eurype; and thererore, to ascertain, as fA AS The rules ch would admit who might be his Germany seemed to hold a hostile attitude, and Italy was known to be greatly under the influence of the German govern: ment. The replies of the Cardinals were highly compli- mentary to Cardinal Pecci for his great learn. ing, noble and firm character, and as to the position he occupied both as a defender of the rights of the Church and as likely to moderate the hostile bearing of the governments of OLD ON HELL.—While they were from work at noon yesterday Amos sald “Lheah’'d er white man reedin’ in de paper dis mornia’ dat folkes wuz "batin’ now whaa- der dere wuz enny hell or not!', ucks:" said old Si: “you'se got dat ug cend fo’ must, sho! Gazette, of St. Petersburg, thinks that the British ships should either go back to Besika Bay or Turkey should be told that she need not expect anything from their presence in the Sea of Marmora; and further, t it the treaty is not speedily signed hostilities will be resumed. It is not now believed that the conference of the powers will take place until after the Adrianople negotiations are concluded. The St. Petersburg correspondent of the Times says that Russia does not desire 0 's, Which would inevita- bly result in the destruction of the Ottoman Empire, but her hesitation should not be con- strued_ as indicating weakness or retreat. A iaier dispatch from St. Petersburg reports that the peace negotiations are making progress and measures are being taken to hasten them’ THE WAR AND PEACE PARTIES IN ENGLAND , The peace meeting and the demonstration in support of the government both took place in Hyde Park yesterday afternoon. There Was, as was expected, great disorder, heated discussions, and mue' Sighting among the 80,000 to 160,000 people assembled in and around the park. An attack was made upon the peace meeting, at which Charles Bradlaugh was the leading spirit, whieh was temporarily broken up. A crowd afterwards went to hoot before Mr. Gladstone's house, but were prevented from doing any mischief by the police. STANLEY IN LonDON.—Stanley speech be- fore the Royal Geographical Society of London on the 8th of February seems to have been in ad taste. Colonel Forney. writing of it, says: “1 wish I could write as warmly of it as Ian of his great labors and discoveries in Africa. But it was in wretched taste. Worse than all, it was uuprepared and he frank enough tosayso. The man tracing his mighty work was, however, the true orator of the evening, and ashe referred to’ what he had done the good people around him forgot his egregious vanity and his apparant disregard tor the place in which he stood, and gave him many rounds of hearty applause. I have a sincere regard for Stanley and for his marvellous la- bors ; but the man seems to have lost his head. The company he met on Thursday evenin; could not have been more distinguished i Benjamin Franklin had been the guest, or George Washington, or even Shakespeare or Milton. Buteither of these characters, like the living Garibaldi, or General Grant, or La- boulaye, or John Bright, would have shown their greatness by that humility which the really eminent mind always in the pi a generous popular recognition. As I heard Stauley’s loose and nonsensical egotism 1 thought of the modesty of the lamented Dr. Kane, and the clear, gentle accents of the de- arted Agassiz.
