What Can England Do? The English—or rather the London popu- lace—are in an explosive state of mind over the Turkish situation, and are breaking the windows of Gladstone's house and the office of the London Nevs; as they once did the win- dows of the Duke of Wellington. The feeling in London does not always indicate the state of sentiment throughout the country, more es- pecially of the manufacturing districts, but by the large majority in nent in support of the Government it would seem that the Brit- ish heart is altogether fired by the aggressive course of Russia. But the question comes up, after all, what are they going to do about it? What can they do?) Had England given aid to Turkey when the latter, single-handed, was holding Russia at bay, the co-operation might have been effeetive, but not now when the Turks are hopelessly crushed and the Russians are in virtual possession of the Turkish capital and of all their strategic and defensive points. ‘The small but gallant army of England would, in co-operation with the Tw ive made a tr points, but would have up-hill work now in attempting to wrest them from the Russians In preponderating foree and fortified by the genius of Todleben. Unless England a form an alliance with other European nations -against Russia, the ebullition of feeling in London will amount to little more in the end than a bill for damages for the Londoners to pay for the window glass broken yesterday. The election of a suceessor to Pius IX. will naturally attract universal attentior The al throne is no inconsiderable elevation. It clothes him who occupies it with absolute power over the consciences of millions, and presents him to the eyes of his subjects as the vieegerent of God. His power is stable, and his edicts cannot be resisted. The college of 1 elevate one of its number lofty position. Cardinal Panebianeosis s likely to be the suecessful candidate. id to have been the favorite of the late Pope, and his advanced age, which would r der a new election necessary in a few & qualification in his favor. For the cardinals are only men, after all, and will not thought- lessly permit a young man to obtain the throne. thus destroying all hope of obtaining for themselves what they con- sider the greatest of priz But the elee- tion of a Pope is as uncertain a matter as the action of a Presidential nominating conven- tion, and no one can predict the result of the conclave. A two-thirds vote is necessary to a choice, and Italian nationality, by long prece- is a requisite to candidature. But if nstances should render it expedient, this jon would probally be disregarded. It in the power of the cardinals to place the Roman church in the way of progress or of reaction. The papacy exerts an immense in- fluence on the world. If a Pope of liberal principles, with the admirable personal ehar- aeter of the late Pontiff is chosen, the whole World will have reason to rejoice. The testimony taken by the Interior Depart- ment in reference to the Freedmen’s Hospital, is now being copied, and will, when this work is completed, be transmitted to the Senate ap- propriations committee to aid them in their labor of investigating this institution. The committee has not been idle. Senators Sar- gent and Eaton called at the hospital on Sat- urday, and found the hospital authorities all on hand, and everything in splendid condition. The excellent showing they were enabled to make does the hospital management great credit, and when one considers the short time allowed them for preparation, and the amount of work which was necessary to make things presentable, the performance was truly remarkable. Itis very rare that government officials throw themselves into reformatory labors with the zeal that characterized the on Friday turday’s visit in prospective. The sub-committee of the appropriations committee also heard testimony yesterday from Drs. Pal- mer, Purvis and Glennin; The testimony of these impartial witnesses is far from sustain- ing the charges brought against the manage- ment of the institution. There is high author: ity—the highest at the hospital in faet—for be- lieving that the wicked subordinates, or in- subordinates, of the hospital who have helped to damage the reputation of the institution by PTE EVENING STAR. | mendous fight indefence of these strategie | [Prrenrant STATISTICAL WORK, THE STATESMAN'S YEAR BOOK, } FOR 1878, | 4a Just imported from London and for sale by | ROBERT BEAL Bookseller and Statio | feb8-2t_495 Pa. ave., adjoining National Hotel. | NOTICE OF BEMovaL. a Having rented of W. It is not ealled to mind that they ever refused the ehureh for the funeral of male sinners, and their action in singling out this poor victim of man’s perfidy seems a good deal of the style of the Woman-stoning Scribes and Pharisees xebuked by Jesus. “Alas ‘or the rarity Of Christian charity Under the sun!” THE WEEKLY STAR now ready, contains all the News of the Week; the Proceedings of Congress; the Russian Suceesses in Turkey; Crisis in European affairs; Washington So- elety and Fashions, by Jennie June ;the death of Sophia Major from abortion ; Society Notes; Agricultural Matters; White House and De- Of various sizes and decorations.
