ST RIEESE ee! The Movement Upon the North Pole. There is a fascination about explorations in unknewn lands that makes men count as noth- ing the extremes of heat and cold, hunger, thirst, and fatigue. The mystery which sur- rounds the Polar re; , and the success With which its barriers of have guarded Secrets in the past, are maddening to the ex- plorer and geographer. The poles have an at- tractive power for those who yearn to know the hitherto unknown and to see the hitherto unseen, like that which they exercise over the Magnetic needle. With us both man and nee- dle are irresistibly turned northward. Were Ss whatever to be derived from the diseovery of the pole, it would still be the goal of many an adventurous spirit. But seience has taken up the matter and will util- ize all the pluck and daring that the world place at its disposal. And itis through tifie discoveries and not commercial advan- tages that polar explorations will benefit man. kind. Magnetism. that wonderful foree whieh men pame and think they know, may yet un- fold its laws through polar investigations. The plan of operations against — the North pole now in contemplation is to attack it by a ystem of gradual approaches. A colony is to be estab- lished on the shore of Lgdy nklin bay, near where a seam of coal nn diseov- ered. Strong substantial buildings are to be carried there, and the colonists to be fur- nished with provisions and other necessary supplies for three years. The nti men who accompany the expedition are to be pro- vided with telephones and telegraph lines, for maintaining communication between succes- sive stations, balloons for purposes of obser- ation, ete., ete. It is thought that the colon- ists will gradually becom eeclimated, and may, by pushing forward when circumstances are favorable, eventually succeed in accom- Plishing the long-sought end. This plan was advocated many years ago by Dr. Hayes, and is now brought forward by Captain Howgate. It is unanimously approved by all who are in- terested in the subject of Polar investigation, including many whose experience in such mat- ters gives their opinions convincing force. It | is possible that government may aid the ex- Pedition by, at least, providing a vessel to €arry the colonists and their supplies to their destination. It is tobe hoped that the wis- dom of the method pursued, and the extreme precautions to be taken to ensure success, may prevent this attempt from adding an- other long list of failures. The Sultan demands an armistice of the Czar and frantically telegraphs to all the eapi- tals of Europe for information concerning his missing peace plenipotentiar sults of th labors. The Czar great indignation at being suspec good faith in the crafty pro! tion of mi tary operations, and meanwhile his troops have advanced within twenty-four hours’ march of Constantinople. England say Russia must not attack Gallipoli: Russia re- plies that she will not. unless Turkish troops are sent there: Turkish troops are massing at Gallipeli. There is a rumor that there was a Probability of the signing of peace conditions and an armistice on Thursday. The extreme definiteness of this interesting bit of informa- tion will cheer the heart of every one who hopes for peace. The fact that the English premier and the Greek premier, whose voices are still for war, were never before in higher favor among their countrymen, the enthusias- tie anti-Russian demonstrations in England, and the recent diplomatic mot of Austr and Italy, will all serve, however, to inspire uneasy donbts as to the prospect of an imme- diate settlement ot dificulties. ———__~o-+e-—__ When did THe Stak meet with a change of heart on the popular-suffrage question in this District?—[ Republican. If the Republicen will consult our files it will see that we came under conviction as long ago as Murder Bay got control at the polls in the District. If our neighbor makes a little further enquiry it will find that the entire body of the taxpayers of the District eame to the same conclusion at the same tim thermore, if the Repyiicon will undertake to inform itself in regard to the wishes of the citizens who have to bear the burden of deb: aud taxation. it will no doubt experi change of heart.” +20e- cabinet seanda The minister of finance was a member of a “ring.” was involved in some “erookedness,” and, nc to drop our expressive newspaper parlance, was “bounced” by the Emperor.
