The New King of I \y- In the present unsettled state of Europea change of rulers in one of its constituent na. | tions cannot fail to deeply agitate all the rest, pleasurably or otherwise, according to the pre- penderance of hopes or fears in the emotions aroused by the new condition of affairs. France ‘asy lest the son may not have the same sonal feeling of friendship towards her as animated the father. Victor Emmanuel, in s political ations with Germany, with Humbe rt may inherit the political but personal sentiments of his father. The Pope and Roman Catholies generally are doubt whether the new King will follow th liberal and considerate policy of his predeces- sor, towards the head of the church over whom he has temporal power but who denies the le- gality of his authority. It is feared that the eburch may not fare so well after the change. Victor Emmanuel entering first upon the reign | a prostrate Kingdom under the most humil- jating cireumstance lived to see his pow from reh who while ev consistent to prine! ple allowed his wisely-seleeted advisers to ar- | range the details of his measures, honest, | straightforward and heroie, he became a rally- ing point for all the seattered ene integrated Italy. Cavour in the Garibaldi in the field were the w which the battle was gained. his son the fruits of vietory rious struggle, and it is re that the sam abinet and apons by He leaves to long and glo- ple to Suppose wise policy which produced a y will be used to perpetuate it. And ment of the internal affairs untry is concerned Humbert will follow strictly in the footsteps of Yet there on for the agi- Nothing is s the development of character i yalty produces. The his- fthe world shows that previous life and ns furnish little clue to the torpid characteristics which the blaze of royalty quickens into lif D one could have guessed the part that Victor Emmanuel would play at the time of his accession to the throne. And the uncertvinties that cluster about a new monarch, uo matter how clear his course may appear to be, give King Humbert at the pres- ent time a somewhat exaggerated importance in the eves of the world. united Ia So far as the the of We heartily join with the ork papers in the hope that there is no truth in the rum in circulation there about the proposed dis- missal of Mr. Frederick Law Olmsted as su- perintendent of the bure Central Park de ¢ contingency would work a double injury to the public service. In the first place, it would deprive the park of anexcellent of second pl. it would enable him to ‘devote his whole time to the decoration of the Capitol grounds in this city. And this last, we submit, would be too much. Not but what Mr. Olm- sted is capable enough as a park engineer, nor that he laeks good ideas in landseape gar- dening proper. He is doubtlessall right there. But he 1s manifestly out of place in the ne borhood of a grand and massive building like the Capitol. Some of the decorative features he has introduced there are well enough adapted for certain portions of a park, or for the grounds of an ornate suburban villa; they tive in themselves, and would be be- ng in a proper place; but they have no business whatever any where near a building of its purposes and proportions. In other words, much of his work has been a mistake of the gravest kind. It has had the effect to de- stroy ail idea of dignityand repose. These are essential features in the surroundings of a building of the size, style and character of the Capitol, and to sacrifice them for any mere effect of prettiness is one of the most flagrant violations of the canons of good taste that can well beconceived. That Mr. Oimsted’s efforts have been a failure in that way is not only the popular verdict, but we think it would be con- firmed by those whosuggested or voted for his employment, and even by his own personal friends, if they had the courage of their con- victions. It isto be hoped, therefore, that he may be retained wholly at the New York park, where he has done some excellent work, well applied, and that some one may be appointed tosucceed him here who will insist that the immediate surroundings of the building shall hereafter be kept in harmony with the build- ing itself. —__~+e2-______ The New York correspondent of the Phila- delphia Ledger, who is a pretty close observer of political movements in Gotham. says there is a curious rumor afloat thatthe Montgomery Blair movement, for re-opening the Presiden- tial count. is pursuant to an understanding which that gentleman had with Mr. Tilden when the former was sojourning in this cit not far from Gramet Square. few weeks sinee. Mr. Tilden has been approached, in order to verify or dissipate this rumor, but he is said to be uncommunicative on the subject. ‘The correspondent adds that there isa class of politicians there who appear to be mani- festing much more concern in the matter than Mr. Tilden and the demoerats. and that the headquarters of this class is in the New York Custom House among republicans. who, a few months ago, would have stigmatized it as rank treason to even suggest the reopening the work of the commission. The intimation is conveyed that the fine Roman hand of Mr. Conkling may be seen in the changed views in the Custom House; but it seems that Mr. Conkling is not inclined to plead guilty to the soft impeachment. He is credited with hav ing said that it would be an act of folly for | the republicans to undertake to invalidate the title of their own President. It would be foolish for either party to seek | to reopen the question. The people want peace and the opportunity to rebuild the | broken-down industries and business interests of the countr, —— Itisto be hoped that the statement of the Republique Francaise that Major La Bordere is to be reinstated in the army is true. Dis- missed as a consequence of his patriotic re- fusal to partidpate in what had the appear- ance of a coup d'etat, republican France should demand that her victory shall become his also. His military insubordination through patriotic motives caused his dismissa!; his patriotism alone, condoning his technical of- fence, should bring about his reinstatement. The Russians have gained possession of Shipka Pass and when they are ready to ad- vance against the last line of Turkish defen- ses, the troops coming from the direction of Sophia and those passing through Shipka wil! co-operate. Russia has received proposals for an armistice, Dut since every day brings out more clearly her own comparative strength and the weakness and demoralization of her enemy, she is in no hurry to put a check to her victories; though there is no doubt that her troops on the Danube are suffering severely from disease, lack of provisions and the severe cold. ——~2--—___ Tue WEEKLY STAR. now ready, contains all the News of the Week ; full account of the Mar- riage of Miss Hicks: the Cold Spell; the Death of King Victor Emmanuel; the Russians in Turkey Agricultural Matters 3 White House and Department News ; eed- ings of the Courts; Loeal Aiur. “Choice ; Poems and SI Sad id Household Mater cess Agricultural Terms: $2 per annui rH in adv: Prepaid; single copies fi lg ag sanity ve cents, in Wrappers, Abmssace DE GOTHA the coliection of outstanding claimsof said firm. bia CHU’ R .
