She said that the experi- ment of woman rulers is not new; fcom the | time of Deborah to the present, women had ruled and ruled well, and notwichstanding this they are deprived of the right to vote. FINGER BILLIARD PLAY) ‘The exhil of Lin finger billiards given by Mr. F Adams last evening was exceedingiy enter. taining and wonderful. The mastery which he possesses over the movements of the balls is quite remarkable, and would hardly be lited exeept on sight. Description is im. ssible, but il may be said that he does ‘y- ng in'the shape of diffienitand unique shots with the greatest ease. His ball deseribes a curve of any description, or takes a serpentine course, touches as many cushionsas the player desires, and finally counts precisely as he an- nou n advance. Occasionaily he would make it run along the rai} at pont, cross the table and 0 2 and end by counting on the red. of-the-way corner. Three hats wy placed on a line with two balls below the fast hat. Mr. Adams made the cue ball describe the letter 5 around the middle hat, take a cushion and count on the two balls. He exhibited some one hundred fancy shots in all, concluding with the “pottle shot.” In this, two bottles are placed ple a foot apart, with a ballon each and a third ball in the opposite corner of the table. Mr. Adams makes the cue ball jump from bottle to bottle, take an English in the air and count on the third ball, thus making a double shot.—{ Hartford Courant, Jan. 5. THE Scyn’s Distance.—From a statement made recently by Richard A, Proctor, the English astronomical writer, it appears that the result of the observations ef the British Transit Expeditions has been to fix the sun's distance from the earth at 93,321,000 miles. This exceeds by nearly a million of miles New- comb’s estimate, generally accepted of late years, and by more than a million of miles Leverrier’s conclusion drawn from the plane- tary perturbations. The authors of the new timate, it seems, admit a probable error of 200,000 miles, while the British Transit Observa- tions in southern localities are yet to be con bined with those made by America, Russia, and Germany at northern stations. It is too early yet, therefore, to lay itdown in the school books and to teach children what the exact distahce of the sun is.
