Within the last twenty years this disease has appeared in this city, it is be- lieved, in only six instances. The interval of time between the cases has become less as the population of the city has inereased,and as the disease has become more pre of our country, lent in all parts and the average interval at ent is about tw ‘ars. It is suggested. by way of explaining this varying interva!, t poison communicated by the saliva of the rabid animal may be enclosed in a nodule of lymph, or entangled in some tissue until a dis. turbance of the cieatrix liberates it. If the poison really remains in the wound during the period of incubation, thorough washing or eauterization, or excision, is a proper preean- tion.
