The faijure to appreciate the great length of the Texan boundary is a fruitful cause of mis- apprehension concerning the true nature of the El Paso riot. It must be carefully distin- guished from the difficulties in the eatile-rais- ing region on the lower Rio Grande, some six hundred miles away. It is the raids in this Iotter section, and the hostile feeling between the dwellers on the opposite sides of the river, that threaten our peaceful re! Mexico. But San Elizarie, some dred miles from the mouth of the Rio Grande and separated from the scenes of eattle raids by a vast wilderness, presents an entirely dif- ferent condit Mf affairs. No trouble exists between the inhabitants of the opposite banks of the rande, because the re of the ne Face and the same sympat ids « “invasions” disturb the pe of this re- mote corner of Texas, because there are no €attle to carry off and no hosti Jing to spur on marauding bands. The Texan bor i and the K rande merely divide a 3 Settlement, ing part of the set inst their will, Of the four thousand inty more than nin tenths are and as they are more than five hundred miles from any read, and jrande on which they is unnay till a thousand miles nearer its mouth, they have little knowledge of tie nati« whieh th m makes them citize w it. To-day the weather turns cool, but up to this time the season been so exceptionally mild as to call for general remark throughout the country. In this quarter th has been almost that of summer, and the prevalent southern wind absolutely brought a sprinkling of musquitoes, who seemed 1 for some hours to enter upon a campaign of August activity. The general belief is that warm weather in winter is unhealthy. and there is an old Eng- lish adage that a green Christmas makes a fat ehureh-yard, but some of our most intelligent Washington physicians question the fact of > inereased mortality from a mild winter, at Teast in this latitude. As one of them says: It issimply bringing Florida to us instead of re- quiring us to go to Florida for balmy winter Weather. Then. again, & is claimed that in mild weather there is much less spread of diseases like searlet fever, and they are less Virulent in character, from the fact that doors and windows can be thrown open, and houses well ventilated. It is held that the proper temperature for health is that where the range yeter in dwelling-houses is not degrees or higher than 74; and the weather we e had this winter has al- lowed this temperature to be maintained in houses without closing up all the means of Ventilation, or excluding all the pure external air. —————~ore-—___ Despite the jealous carping of some the New York papers upon the management of the New York Tritune by Whitelaw Reid. we think it cannot be denied by any candid news. n of experience that Mr. Reid has fitness for his responsible posi- one misses the quaint, vigor- ously-expressed, but frequently unsound utler- ances of Horace Greeley in its uimns, the Tritane, Whole, isa better newspaper, and m in all its departim a etropolitan daily th: s.
