VANGEN- DER—This is a case of much importance, ulict in the state- ments which have gone out in reference to it we have made inquiry to ascertain the fa: waich are as follows: A. Vangender, a cle inthe Pension Office, was detatied by the Commissioner of Fensious as agentand sent to the siateof Teanessee io investigate some pension cases wherein fraud was suspected. In the course of the in- vesligations he elicited testimony tending to ebarge a Nashville frm of claim agents with defrauding a pensioner of a portion of her peusion money, by taking from her a great- er fee than allowed by statute. Vangender is now indicted in a criminal court of the state upon the charge that in obtaining that testimony he was guilty of subornation of perjury. The pending proceediugs upon the writ of habeas corpus are instituted by the United States authorities to setile the ques- tion whether a requisition of the governor of @ state, resting upon an indic:ment for an of- Jence against te law of the United States, and which is not also an offence against the law of the state should be honored and te person claimed delivered over. While the Merits Of the case cannot now be inquired into, it 1s not improper lo say that Mr. Vai gerder is regarded by his acquaintances and by the Commissioner of Pensions as lacapa- bie of the crime of which he is charzed.
