Dr. Verdi in the ebair. A report by Health Officer Keene Bpon a further examination of the Wallaeb Seboo! building was read, in which he states that he, in company with the inspector of buildings and a number of the school trus- tees, called there to ascertain if his former Instructions as to certain improvement ecessary to iis sanitary condition had bee: @erried out, and he found that they had been ovly partly +xecuted. ADULTERATION oF LiqvoRs.—Prof. Eli | Jobnson, of Ereokiyn, delivered a lecture last night at the Metropolitan church, under the auspices of the Temperance Union, on the subject of adulterated drinks. Rev. Dr. Grey, of the North Washirgton Baptist eburch, presided, aud temperance songs were interspersed by the cboir thronghout the exercises. Briant for present- ing a faise claim for horses and mules, wa continued in the Criminal! Court, Jadge Mac- Arthur. yesterday. After recess, when Capt Jobn Willian was under examination, he asked permission to refresh his memory f-om his memorandum book. Gen. Butler read it, whem the fact was shown that Briant, after being arrested, was inveigled to the witness room. where parties were concealed to listen to what statements might be made by bim., to be used as evidence against bim. Gen. Butler said now they asked the court | to become a party to such a transaction and become a party to this stolen testimony. He submitted that such evidence should not be beard, for no man, no matter how blameless bis life might have been, would be safe if ibis class of testimony ts to be received. District Attorney Wells said that this wit- ness bad been called a thrice-admited per- jurer, but bis manner was in bis favor. He would not condemn nor defend the methods of the detectives, and did not think tne od- Jection was material. The Court said he had little sympathy with the wholesale punciations hurled at de- tectives in all criminal proceedings. They should be upright men, and area powerful aid in the promotion of justice. The confes- sions of @ party should be freely :nade, and | he charged that If the statement of this de- | fendant had been c»tained by entr«pping | bim, then it was obnoxious to the law. Tes- | Umony of this kind should not be used here, or anywhere else, so he should take the evi- dence out of the case and from the jary. The testimony of the witness was then re- sumed, and he testified that he had no fur- ther conversation with Briant than occarred in the room, but had with Col. Craig at St Louis. Craig promised to send the witness funds when he reachea this city, where it Was awaiting bim. Col. Craig paid him gether abont $60. INQUISITION OF ESCHEAT.—A jury of fif- teen treebholders of Alexandria counly and F. M. Mills, escheater for the county, met at the court house to-day and held an inquest upon the lands of which James Hilton, in 1% died seized and sessed.
