The Citizens’ Committee appeared before the House District Committee this morning, and had a full and thoughtful hearing by the latter. We understand that the visiting cit!- zens express themselves as much gratified by the intelligent Interest displayed by the | members of the District Committee in the details presented to them upon the District Situation. This was not only the case with regard to Gov. Hendee, of Vermont, and Judge Hunton, of Virginia, who as old members of the committee are familiar with District needs; but by the committe one and all. It was evident that most ff not all the members have, in official capacities or other- Wise at their homes, acquainted themselves very fully in regard to state and municipal matters, &c., enabling them to take an intel- higent view, both of the relations between t general government and the District of C lumbia; and of the proper mode of dealing With the municipal affairs of the National Japital. ——_~-o<e. asantness with the Mex- teas nts of recent oscurrence, a‘fecting our relations with Mexico, are the rumored inva- sion of that country by Col. Theeircumstanc:s of the | ease require that regular troops should be | employed. Congress goes beyond its | consti ious in defining thenum. | ber of soldiers to be stationed there, the Pres: must see that the force is sufficient It isto be hoped the coming to this city of Mr. Zamacoua as the representative of the Diaz government may lead to an under- Standing with Mexico which will enable the United States to act forcibly and effectively in this matter, with. out any violation of international law. ‘The feeling of the Mexicans that under the Present relations of the two goveroments Many of the acts of our officers are outra- geous encroachments, whose toleration may establish them as precedents, should co- operate with the outery of injured Texans to bring about a new and effective treaty. Among the benefits to be attained by tne maintenance cf peaceful relations between the United States and Mexico, is the pros- pective one of an immense commercial trade between the two nations. Attention has only lately been turned in this direction, and it will be strange ifthe advantages which our proximity and the superior quality of many of our manufactures give, are not made sources of great profit by American enter- Prise. The protection of the Texan border by sufficient regular troops, the punishment of the raiders without a violation of inter- natienal law, and the development of our commerce with our southern neighbor, are the problems presented to our government in connection with Mexico, and it is of the hb ghest importance to the interests of this try that they receive careful considera- = and @ wise selution. The Paris expos tion n bill, bas at last run the gauntlet of the House, and if it gets through the Senate unchanged it will secure our representation to the extent of $150,000 at Paris next year. So much time has been | already wasted that any considerable delay ofaction on the part of the Senate, or amend- ments, making a conference necessary, will probably cause our exhibit at Paris to be as discreditable as one at Vienna. Prompt- ness of action is even more necessary than hiberality of appropriation. The crowding inte three or four months of the work of four- teen. and the limited means likely to be | furnished seem to insure our defeat in this peaceful contests of nations. Besides the ef- forts which national pride should call forth | to make at least a respectable representation of our products and industries. we owe an | especial debt of honor to our sister republic at this juncture. She has come safely through a severe crisis, and we,of all na- tions, should give her the warmest congratu- lations, and should assure her of our firm | friendshtp, our sympathy with her in past dangers and our pleasure at her present | fafety by an honorable representation at her | ‘world. feast. — Massachusetis ts reminded by the Detroit Free Press that she is only the forty-fifth part of this country.
