A_ HoRRIbLE MURDER OF A GIRL.— horrible murder was committed Tuesd: night near Sanford station, on the Indiana- polis and St. Louis railroad, at the residence of Burgoyne Tritt, a wealthy farmer. His pe pear Rosa, aged 19, has m the object of attention from @ young man in the neigh- borhood, a2.d also from Salvanus Burnham, @ hired maan, who has been in the employ of Mr. Tritt three years. Oa Sunday eveni Rosa’s lover paid her a visit, which causi a quarrel with Burnham, and he threatenei her, saying that be would get even with his rival. Tuesday night the old folks were awakened by a light, and it was found that the ape story Of the house was on fire and Burpham missing. The house was consum- ed. The corpse uf Rosa was found in the ruins, with her tegs, arms and head buraet off, but there Was enough evidences to suow that the girl's throat had been cut. She also bad a deep wound in her side, Burnham is still missing. THE RIGHT TO SUBPENA STATE OrFi- CIALS.—A special dispatch from Pitisourg to the Philadelphia Telegraph says: The ar- gument involving the right of the grand | jury to compel the attendance of Governor Hartrap{t and other state officials as wit- nesses was heard this morning before the supreme court, a full bench being present. Attorney General Lear and Deputy Attorney general Gilbert appeared for the governor, arc District Attorney Montooth, Assistant | Hunter and George Sherar for the county. TLe argument occupied about four hours, | the Attorney General and Deputy Gilvert maintaining the position which they as- sumed at the outset when the officials de- clined to respond to the subpcenas, claiming that neither the governor nor his subor- dinates could be compelled to respond, and that the court bas no authority to issue al- tachments. SPITING A Wire.—Some time ago it was given out that Michael O’Langhlin, living on French Prairie, tad died at bis’ sister's the owaer See George- resideuce. The funeral was duly celebrated | at the chnreb, though the collin was not opened, since the deceased requested that it be not done, as he did not waut his wife to take a last look athim. They had quarelled some time ago and were divorced. In due time, and at Lhe request of the wife of the de- ceased, E. S. Gregoire was appointed amia- istrator of the estate. The administrator commenced settling up the business as required by law, when ramors reached him that O'Laughiin was not dead, but had pean seen since his alleged funeral. The grave has been opeved and the coffin-lid taken off, when lo and behold! the carcass of a sheep was disclosed. No criminal intent is aseribe-l to the parties in this wansaction, and it is explained by the fact that O'Laughlin is a to spite his divorced wife. There are fewer gray heads in the present House than in any previous one.
